Well, he- llo, and ding dong! The old smoothie of many a movie has left us. Who remembers his hilarious Carnaby Street makeover in Doctor In Clover, his many 'suave' comedic chat-ups to uninterested dolly birds? He had serious roles too - Out of Africa, Empire of the Sun, Scandal, but for me he'll always be the hopeless raffish chancer in search of the next chat-up opportunity. A legend has departed but the work stays with us. Any favourite moments?

"The old smoothie...his many 'suave' comedic chat-ups to uninterested dolly birds...hopeless raffish chancer in search of the next chat-up opportunity." That comes close to the perfect description of the smooth-talking car salesman Freddie Fox in 1962's The Fast Lady, which I saw for the first time not nine hours ago. He was most enjoyable, and how very odd it is to come across his obit first thing next morning.

His appearence in Midsomer murder as a driver victimized by a pretty blond villainess. Even when she pushes him out of a moving car he finds her energy and ankles appealing. He could be smarmy without making you want to slap him. Of course his voicing of the Sorting Cap was perfection.

Phillips was the voice of the Sorting Hat in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. "Gryffindor!"

Very funny, sensitive, erudite man in person, it would seem. His dvd commentary tracks recorded for the 'Carry On' movies are a sheer delight.
