Haneke is one of those directors I've been meaning to try for years now, but just have never gotten around to. Barnes and Noble recently started their Criterion sale (50% off all their Criterion Blu/dvds) and I decided on a whim to give him a shot. I decided on Funny Games (The original 1997 version) which was brilliant but a painful watch. It knows that we've seen suspense films, it knows that we know the rules and much like Scream it's here to remind you of them, but unlike Scream it's here to remind you in a most unpleasant way. It's a hard watch with scenes that are painful to view. It's rather brilliant, but not for everyone. (I gave it an 8/10)
So, now that I've finally seen one, I'm interested in watching more. What are your favorite Haneke films, or do you have a suggestion that you think may be better for a newcomer?

The White Ribbon (2009) is my favourite. Caché (Hidden) (2005) and Amour (2012) are very good too. The Piano Teacher (2001) was well reviewed when it came out if I am not mistaken but I remember disliking it.

I've only seen The Piano Teacher, which I really liked though. That's his only movie I've seen + I liked it = seems appropriate for newcomers to Michael Haneke. I don't know much about him. I don't know if he's a director and a writer or just a director, and there's as good as argument as any that the two stars were excellent. Isabelle Huppert is bone-chillingly good. She could make villains in Marvel movies feel like they need to leave the room for their own safety.
Funny Games is the only one I know to look for next, but I'm open to anything really. If they're anything like The Piano Teacher then I need a running start. that movie never left the deep end.

I love his cold detached style. Very hard to rank as they're all very close and some are due a rewatch
8 The White Ribbon Funny Games (1997) Funny Games (2007) Hidden Code Unknown The Piano Teacher
7 Happy End
Considering getting the Criterion set of his first 3 films, due for release in December
Not sure what I'd recommend first (or second). Funny Games is probably his most "overt" and "attention grabbing", and though they are more or less shot for shot the original is preferrable due to the particularly engaging performance of the main villain. I'd possibly go with Hidden or The White Ribbon next

I've only seen Happy End, which I loved, but none of his other films have really demanded my attention. That could change though.

I watched "Code Inconnu" the other day. I wasn't enjoying its extremely fragmented narrative (or lack thereof) while I was watching it, but towards the end and after I finished, I changed my mind.

He’s bit of a rebel and provocateur. I like his dramas (Amour, Happy End) and his thriller Cache. Must check out more of his stuff. Hated Funny Games though
