The strong Stephen King adaptation of "Dolores Claiborne," with Kathy Bates in her favorite role. This 1995 suspense melodrama has a great cast: Jennifer Jason Leigh as Bates adult dysfunctional daughter; David Strathairn as scoundrel hubby Joe; Christopher Plummer as the dogged detective; and most memorably, Judy Parfitt as rhymes with rich Vera Donovan. Taylor Hackford directs this engrossing story with great skill and style. My fun take: ricksrealreel.blogspot.com/2022/11/kathy-bates-stephen-king-encore-dolores.html

Is this David Strathairn's only role as a villain?

Yes - a rip roaring full blooded melodrama rather than a horror - one can imagine a 1946 version from Warners with Bette & Olivia ( or maybe Joan Leslie or Ann Blyth) & maybe Billie Burke in the Judy Parfitt part.
Does Strathairn in LA CONFIDENTIAL count as a villain?

Does Strathairn in LA CONFIDENTIAL count as a villain? Good question. In the context of the movie he was almost sympathetic, but really he was a nasty piece of work.

As I wrote in my review, I thought if "Dolores Claiborne" had been made in the '50s, Bette Davis would have been a great Dolores (Catered Affair mode) and Joan Crawford a natural as Vera Donovan! Also, re-watching to review, I realized how similar the St. George family was to the wrong side of the tracks Cross family in "Peyton Place."
