Richard Dreyfuss & Harrison Ford ~ Box-Office Pacemakers (1973 - 1981)
Richard Dreyfuss nailed a small but telling part in Mike Nichols' comedy 'The Graduate' (1967) having worked in television for several years. A year later, he earned himself a plum role in Arthur Dreifuss' controversial picture 'The Young Runaways' (1968). It would be several more years of hard grind before he'd ignite the domestic box-office ...
Richard Dreyfuss ~ Box-Office Highlights (1973 - 1977)
'American Graffiti' (1973 - George Lucas) : Budget $777,000 / Box Office $140,000,000
'Dillinger (1973 - John Milius) : Budget $1,000,000 / Box Office $2,000,000 (includes US & Canada rentals)
'Jaws' (1975 - Steven Spielberg) : Budget $9,000,000 / Box Office $476,500,000

'The Goodbye Girl' (1977 - Herbert Ross) : Budget "undisclosed" / Box Office $102,000,000
Keynotes : John Milius' drive-in picture 'Dilllinger', an ultraviolent crime biopic, eventually raked in double its budget. Herbert Ross' milestone romantic comedy 'The Goodbye Girl' is sometimes cited today as being the first "rom-com" to have broken the $100 million dollar threshold at the box-office.
Harrison Ford got his break in movies when Roger Corman cast him in the western 'A Time For Killing' (1967), a studio project that Corman departed due to creative differences (he was replaced by crime specialist Phil Karlson). Ford's casting as a man of rank provided a future blueprint for a pair of decidedly shifty performances given for Francis Coppola in 'The Conversation' (1974) and 'Apocalypse Now' (1979); Coppola had worked alongside Corman in the 1960s. Among Corman's company members, Ford would also work with action supremos Irvin Kershner and Ron Howard.
FUN FACT : In additon to giving Richard Dreyfuss a break in to movies, Mike Nichols directed Harrison Ford in 'Working Girl' (1988) and 'Regarding Henry' (1991). According to associates of Nichols, he held Dreyfuss' chaotic talent in high regard.
