As we remember Kristallnacht November 9th and 10th 1938, I am thinking of the way it has been shown in Film and Tv. Unlike my usual way of leaving my own comments til later, I decided to prime the pump a bit
Upstairs Downstairs - the reboot stars Claire Foy as a British aristocrat interested in Sir Oswald Mosley and British Fascism. She ends up going to Berlin where she makes the rounds ending up with a well- placed Ss officer. She ends their repaltionship in early november1938 and finds herself on the streets during the pogram , hiding in a phone booth as the glass crashes around her. Showing the shattering glass is a feature of all film portrayals of Kristallnacht. The “rioters” , mostly Nazis in street clothes being directed by Operatives of Reinhard Heinrich, look at her menacingly but decide she is not their target and move on. This underscores the fact that the rioters were purpose driven and selective. Foy realizes she has underrated the violence and danger she had allied herself to, and wants to return to England. Btw, were there in fact street Phone booths in Europe in 1938?
Answer- yes .they were called Fernsprecher. They were metal, larger than the US booth and often had vending machines outside for stamps, bus tokens etc.
the Holocaust - a tv mini following a German gentile family and a German Jewish family as Hitler came to power. The Jewish family mostly felt they were safe enough until their bookstore was destroyed during Kristallnacht. The Grandfather ,a WWI veteran with an Iron Cross was dragged out ,beaten and forced to march through the street beating a child’s drum. He never really recovered and committed suicide. The scenes of the pogram were shot in close to avoid the need for lots of extras, which diminished the sense of chaos.
