This performer's role in a film may have played a part in his doing something that got his movies banned from many theaters about a decade later. What was the film, and who was the actor?

Lew Ayres in ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT ? Correct! Ayres was considered a little "strange" by others in Hollywood because he liked to keep to himself and was a vegetarian who studied different philosophies and religions, including Buddhism. His role in the antiwar film may have influenced his decision to register as a conscientious objector at the start of WWII, fully intending to enlist as a medic (often a very dangerous assignment in the miltary). The Army said no, and when word got out, studios turned on him, calling him a "disgrace," a "yellow dog," etc. Theaters banned his films; theater patrons threatened boycotts; and military bases banned the showing of his films. Ayres served honorably as a medic, and after the war, when attitudes had shifted once again, Ayres was able to resume a movie career.
