He was Judy Garland's favorite actor; she wrote a gushing fan letter to him after he starred in a 1934 film. Who was the actor?

NTA. Garland was called upon to perform that "Dear Mr. Gable" number for Gable's birthday party, and she later repeated the performance in a movie. But in reality, she'd written the letter to another star at the time (and personally, I'd agree with her original choice over Gable). But Gable was the one being pushed for mega-stardom at the time, so she had to do what she was told. Maybe they got the idea for the "Dear Mr. Gable" bit from her fan letter to this other actor.

Correct! Judy Garland had a crush on him after seeing him in The Count of Monte Cristo (1934) and wrote him a gushing fan letter. I would guess that this may have sparked the idea in some publicist's head to have Garland put in a plug for their rising star Gable by making him the target of that letter. Donat would later beat out Gable for a Best Actor Oscar; I hope that gave Garland some pleasure (Gable didn't seem her type, anyway). Just to mention, I was also about twelve, like Judy, when I first had a crush on Mr. Donat; the movie that did it for me was The 39 Steps. And for the record, Durante was kind of cute.
