I haven't seen all that many of her films, but she definitely had a presence. I looked her up on Wikipedia and was sad to read that her career was cut short by alcoholism, and that she died in her early 50s of cirrhosis.

I saw a number of her movies from the forties, like This Gun for Hire, Sullivan's Travels, The Blue Dahlia, and The Glass Key. She was good.

I loved her in Sullivan's Travels, This Gun for Hire, and So Proudly We Hail (perhaps her best performance with one powerful scene that haunts to this day). She wasn't a great actress, but she had a great presence and was always a pleasure to watch. So Proudly We Hail (1943)
Sullivan's Travels (1941), with Joel McRae
This Gun for Hire (1942), with Alan Ladd

in 1942 there was for me, the best thing about it was that poster ! Despite the mostly glowing IMDb user reviews and looking forward to seeing it ... I found it one of the dumber "comedies" of the era, which I usually rather enjoy. Lake was not the problem, however... the story was !
