and lets not forget the old Failing To Make Enough Money controversy... To be sure, CLEOPATRA was a successful enough box office hit. Not enough (but close) to fully recoup its costs, but definitely nowhere near the lost cause HEAVENS GATE made at the box office. Yes by regular standards it made a lot of money - and you are right re direct comparison with HEAVENS GATE - they were simply my first two thoughts. but CLEOPATRA also has acquired a rep of being central to the death of Studio era Hollywood - plus of course the on set antics of Liz & Dick - which for me is enough to secure it a place in the Dishonourable Mentions. My third thought for this category I don't pay much mind to BO stuff so they may not be the best examples

You are probably right - but I was there in the 70s and LAST TANGO seems to trump the competition in entering the global consciousness. Myself I'm leaning towards SALO - some images in that I regret ever seeing - Have ranked my top ten - bumped DEEP THROAT on basis oral sex not quite the shocker it was back in the day - and reinstated THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST Where Birth and Last Tango are concerned, your remarks here may point to where the difference between the two lies: the distance of time vs the immediacy of the moment. Tango was certainly generating more discussion in '72 than Birth and, just as with Deep Throat, the passage of time and the further boundary-pushing that goes with it dampened its effects. When Birth is discussed at all these days, it remains as controversial as ever, so it might be fair to say that its impact has been the more enduring of the two. I guess I should give weighting to both the historical controversy value and that acquired since original release, as well as trying to get a range of types of controversy (sex, violence, faith, Nazisploitation, etc). I wanted a broader spread across the years but failed.

Don't know what happened to my lengthy reply re the controversial Maladolescenza , damn, will have to rewrite and repost it later. Please do Jeff - loving that I'm finding out about movies I have never heard of - even as jaded a movie whore as I am needs the odd lurid shocker to get me through the long winter evenings (I don't think you get those in SA). Wiki says allegations of Child Porn! Don't get yourself banned or the thread deleted now! PS Would you personally recommend A SERBIAN FILM?

The Solo BO debacle was the result the most controversial Star Wars movie that destroyed the Star Wars franchise:

Wiki says allegations of Child Porn! Don't get yourself banned or the thread deleted now! PS Would you personally recommend A SERBIAN FILM? It's definitely something you should watch at least once, just make sure it's an uncut version. It's a truly twisted dark black comedy with a political edge, and some *one-of-a-kind dialogue - and yes, someone gets fatally stabbed in the eye socket by an erection. I'm not saying you will enjoy it - or that you won't, but, at the very least, you will able to say you have seen it. * "It's a pleasure to shake the hand that has jerked such a big cock." PS. There are scenes in the film which the mother grundies take literally when they are clearly meant to be taken allegorically.
