Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film.
FIRST TIME FILM VIEWING
All Quiet on the Western Front (2022, Edward Berger) Netflix Another remake of the 1930 classic ww1 movie that I have only seen sections of. It is very well made and acted but quite relentlessly grim which given the subject matter is fitting but might be too much for some. The score was very in the trend of scores for a lot of elevated horror films and took me out of the film from time to time but this is a mild complaint. One of the best films of the year. 7.5/10
New York Confidential (1955, Russell Rouse) Pretty tough film noir about the crime families in New York. Could’ve been leaner but had a good finale. 6/10
Arabesque (1966, Stanley Donnen) A colourful next offering from the director after his hit film Charade. It’s silly and I can’t help think it would’ve been better with Cary Grant however Peck has a few good moments. 6/10
Air Force One (1997, Wolfgang Peterson) Disney+ Well this is Die Hard on a plane but not in the same class at all and made in a naive time when you could sell an American president as a hero. It pretty lazily steals a lot f beats from Die Hard but doesn’t execute them well. Also Harrison Ford doesn’t have that much to do for a lot of the run time and has little presence. Gary Oldman as the villain holds centrar stage and he’s the best part of the film but it’s pretty lopsided between protagonist and antagonist from a storytelling point of view. 4.5/10
Nobody’s Fool (1994, Robert Benton) This film has a good cast, is well acted but is so thin that it barely feels like a movie. 4/10
REPEAT FILM VIEWING
None this week.
FIRST TIME TV VIEWING
Derry Girls (2022, Season Three) Netflix Good final season of this funny Irish show. Good TV

While Charade found a good balance between mystery, romace and comedy, this felt a bit too silly with a weak crime plot. 5/10 Air Force One (1997, Wolfgang Peterson) I watched this at the cinema when it came out, and I don't think I've seen it since. Even back then I found it a bit dull and forgettable. Sudden Death was a better Die Hard rip-off. 5/10 Nobody’s Fool (1994, Robert Benton) Another movie which I haven't seen for what feels like an eternity. I remember liking the cast, but definitely not something I would consider revisiting. 4/10

First Time Viewing
The Batman (2022; Matt Reeves) - The worst Batman ever. It's like the director was determined to suck out any piece of fun and excitement from the franchise resulting in a tedious and fairly pretentious movie. The cinematography is often so dark, that I could barely make out what was happening on screen. Add to this a lot of whispering and mumbling from the main characters and 30 minutes in I was already half asleep. There is very little action, and most of it is fairly generic with Batman beating up faceless goons, with the exception of the car chase. Performances are also a mixed bag Pattinson felt miscast, Sarsgaard in his few scenes was shockingly weak, Serkis barely registered and Wright was utterly wasted. Though there is some decent work from the villains, especially Farrell and Turturro. However the few positives weren't enough to make this an acceptable film for me. 2.5/10
Mr. Frost (1990; Philippe Setbon) - Jeff Goldblum is a serial killer pretending to be satan in this low-key but fun thriller. 7/10
13 Ghosts (1960; William Castle) - Good-natured family friendly fun. Watching this without the required glasses is a bit weird, because you can barely make out the titular ghosts, but still a nice little movie. 6/10
Repeat Viewing
Prisoners (2013, Denis Villeneuve) - It's very much style over content with a story that has a few too many plot-holes and for an almost three-hour movie the last act felt pretty rushed. However Roger Deakins' cinematography is absolutely stunning and I really like Jake Gyllenhaal's loner detective. 6.5/10
