Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film. FIRST TIME FILM VIEWINGThe Locket (1946, John Brahm)Entertaining and well paced film noir that is structured with flashbacks within flashbacks within flashbacks. It is well acted and solidly enough directed but with little visual flair. 6.5-7/10The Brasher Doubloon (1947, John Brahm)This typically convoluted Philip Marlowe noir has its moments but is let down by the two leads although a strong turn from Florence Bates (Rebecca) in a supporting role almost elevates it. 5.5/10REPEAT FILM VIEWINGUnstoppable (2010, Tony Scott) blu rayIn the second half of his career, director Tony Scott ushered in a cross cutting, multi-camera style that he sometimes over played but with this one he is at the height of his powers and pitched it perfectly. 7.5-8/10FIRST TIME TV VIEWINGAndor (2022, Season One)The best written and most cohesive Star Wars show yet. It’s more serious tone and deliberate pacing may not be for everyone but I loved this every day man, grass roots look at the formation of a rebellion. My only complaint is that the worst and least interesting character is the title character. Great TVKiller Sally (2022, Docu-series) NetflixThree part documentary about the murder of a Mr Olympia contestant. Fairly even handed account that doesn’t outstay it’s welcome. Solid TVWEEKLY FILM AWARDSBEST FILM: Unstoppable BEST ACTOR: Chris Pine - Unstoppable BEST ACTRESS: Laraine Day - The Locket BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Brian Aherne - The Locket BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Florence Bates - The Brasher Doubloon BEST EDITING: Robert Duffy - Unstoppable BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Ben Seresin - Unstoppable BEST SCORE: Henry Gregson-Wiliams - Unstoppable BEST SCRIPT: Sheridan Gibney - The Locket BEST DIRECTOR: Tony Scott - Unstoppable 10/10 - Perfection (or as close to it as possible) 09/10 - An Excellent film 08/10 - A VERY Good film 07/10 - A Good film 06/10 - A Solid film 05/10 - An Average film 04/10 - Below Average film 03/10 - A mostly bad film 02/10 - A mostly terrible film 01/10 - Awful through and through 00/10 - Not only awful but offensive too Unstoppable (2010, Tony Scott) I agree. One of Scott's best. 7.5-8/10

Sorry to say none of yours this week. Unstoppable is a film I've been meaning to check out though. Mine... not much this week. It's been a busy time for me. The original film that Scorsese remade as The Departed. I enjoyed this version almost as much as Scorsese's. The only reason I prefer the American remake overall as a film is because, as this one is part of a trilogy, there were a few scenes included that were obviously tied to something we'll see in the prequel film (or maybe the third film which is a sequel? Don't quite know yet). My point is The Departed is a more "complete" film, but this was quite good as well. 8/10 The Good Dinosaur (Peter Sohn, 2015) It's very pretty, I mean the environment of the film is stunning. A true work of art. I'm glad of that because it's really the best the film has going for it. It takes a boy and his dog story, turns it into a dinosaur and his human and tries to add elements of a coming of age western (with cattle rustlers and everything). It's such a weird mix and it just doesn't work that well for me. As said it's beautiful to look at and it's not a terrible movie, but it is not one I care for. 4/10 Infernal Affairs II (Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, 2003) Prequel that shows the two moles from the first movie at the start of their careers. I really liked aspects of this one and honestly had it been a standalone I think I would have possibly liked it as much as Infernal Affairs (also the way it uses the handover of Hong Kong to China is rather brilliant). That said, I don't particularly care for the "insights" it gives us into these characters as it make me question choices they made in the first movie. It's not bad, but I think it would have been better as a totally different story. 7/10 Infernal Affairs II (Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, 2003) I actually liked this even more than the first one. To me what you write in your review would apply to the third movie which makes you see things and characters in a different light again and I thought went a step too far by needlessly overcomplicating things. 8/10

It's the great cast which makes this work. - 7/10 The Deer Hunter (1978, Michael Cimino) - Some strong moments, but the wedding sequence just goes on too long for my taste. - 7/10 Braveheart (1995, Mel Gibson) - On a purely technical level this is undoubtedly very impressive, even groundbreaking when it comes to the intense and very graphic fight sequences. Regarding the characters and historical accuracy it's arguably less successful and some of the antagonists almost come over as caricatures. - 6.5/10 The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957, David Lean) - 7/10 The Darjeeling Limited (2007, Wes Anderson) - 6/10 The Maltese Falcon (1941, John Huston) - 8/10 Knives Out (2019, Rian Johnson) - 9/10

First Time Viewing
Homicidal (1961; William Castle) - This Psycho rip-off starts out strong, but despite its short running time couldn't quite hold my interest, even though the ending turns out rather memorable as well. 6/10
Hunted (2020; Vincent Paronnaud) - Darkly humorous "frenchsploitation" about a woman pursued by a violent pervert. Modeled after the Little Red Riding Hood tale. Not quite as good and not even half as gory as the somewhat similar Revenge (2017), but huge fun, assuming you like this sort of pitch black comedy. 6.5/10
I Remember You (2017; Óskar Thòr Axelsson) - Rather tedious Icelandic ghost story. It's a slow-burn telling its tale in an unhurried, old-fashioned style, but I found neither the characters nor the plot interesting enough to really care. 4/10
TV Dark Angel (2000-2002) - Season 1 - I might've liked this better had I watched it as a teenager, but as a middle-aged guy this has very little of interest for me. Surprisingly for a show created by James Cameron it also looks pretty cheap, basically like your typical Canadian genre series. 4.5/10
Repeat Viewing
Immortals (2011; Tarsem Singh) - I remembered next to nothing about this except, that I disliked it the first time around. Now after my rewatch I at least have to admit, that it does have some creative costume design, but I still found the action repetitive, the visuals too artificial and the acting (with the exception of Mickey Rourke's delciciously nasty villain) utterly atrocious . 5/10

I Haven't gotten around to watching Infernal Affairs, but The Departed is one of my favorite movies. I watched it in the cinema 3 times in one week. I understand why The Good Dinosaur is not very well-liked, but I think it is a fun movie. 7/10 Oh my gosh, I'm apparently an idiot. I'll need to edit that. Sorry.

(2008, Phyllida Lloyd) - Yeah, was not a fan. I don't like Jukebox musicals in general and they really have to impress to make them worth it. This one did not. 5/10
The Roaring Twenties (1939, Raoul Walsh) - Been years since I've seen it but I remember liking it. 7/10
The Deer Hunter (1978, Michael Cimino) - I think it's brilliant. First time I watched it I felt the wedding scene was a bit overlong, but second time around I appreciated it more. 8/10
The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957, David Lean) - Not a fan of war movies, but I like this one. 8/10
The Maltese Falcon (1941, John Huston) - One of my favorite movies. 9/10
Knives Out (2019, Rian Johnson) - I finally saw this a couple of weeks back and really enjoyed it. 8/10
