GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 has all the elements that made the previous 2 movies so good, minus two major exceptions: A) The tone is uneven; and B) The title sequence feels lazy (an issue that was also present in the holiday special they released in 2022). This sequel explores Rocket Racoon's backstory. Those scenes are presented as memories he's thinking about, but only a couple of times. Most of them happen without any rhyme or reason. Present-day Rocket isn't even present in a lot of the situations that are interrupted by these flashbacks. Why not cut to a brief shot of him before going back in time? That would serve as a proper transition. A lot of the M.C.U. installments feature the trope where it looks like one of the heroes is about to die but something/someone saves them at the last minute. That happens here with Star-Lord during the climax, and it's annoying as always. However, it also happens in an earlier scene and it's worse than usual. During a battle, Drax and Nebula are shot. Once the gang escapes, the two of them... are fine. Their injuries aren't really acknowledged. What the fuck?! At least Star-Lord's quasi-death generates a reaction from his friends, which is technically relevant to the script, but this is just a waste of time! After Gamora's death, a variant from another timeline showed up. This was clearly part of a plan to have a substitute (as a member of the team and as Star-Lord's girlfriend), but it doesn't end happening. That's right: The popular sci-fi/fantasy franchise refused the opportunity to undo a negative event and keep the audience satisfied. That takes balls! 7/10

I have had "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" stuck in my head since I saw this Thursday.
Stupid Alice Cooper cover song, not any of his incredible original songs, & it won't go away.
Because it was SO PERFECT. Starlord off on one of his hairbrained schemes & this song playing....

B+SPOILERS+- I can appreciate now that the post-Infinity Saga book has shut any/all loose ends from where we'd been. Thor & the Revengers angle went nowhere, as did Peter's future with the Gamora he knew. Kinda sux for him that while Steve Rogers ended up dancing with his lady after undoing Thanos stuff, Peter Quill is dealt the former g/f who no longer knows him. I did like her line 'I bet we were fun' as an olive branch. Then again... both her & Peter aren't youngsters having flings anymore. Just like Banner & Nat, time to move along. - Rocket's backstory had been anticipated for years, & they did a pretty good job of it. The most emotional animated characters since Toy Story 3. - Very good soundtrack/music choices. Huge props for giving The Beastie Boys millions of potential new fans - that scene, just that song & fighting sounds, was perfect. - Adam Warlock was interesting. I'd heard his name in the MCU chatter for years now. I still don't know much about him, other than some egoist with Captain Marvel powers?? I'll read more... -- Film was uneven, yet that actually calibrates out to a baseline for its entirety early enough - aka I got used to it, both tonally & credibly. Alas it still felt rudderless & fully unpredictable - not least of all deaths/potential deaths. The bouncy castle looking place where they're wearing coloured space suits proved to be an entire sequence I could've done without. - Utterly forgettable villain/baddies... sadly, a commonality within the MCU, why break precedent now. Post-credit 'The Legendary Star-Lord will return' got the most noticeable post-credits audible audience buzz since Thanos after The Avengers. The best post-EG MCU title, though a bit cheating as it's an ensemble crew we've been with since 2014. Still, not being smashed over the head with multi-verse stuff was legit refreshing.

Saw it last night and really enjoyed it, I dare say it might be the best of the trilogy. I'd rank them: 1 3 2 & that's likely going to be a fairly common list. Vol.1 they were younger, brasher, within the Infinity Saga's macro arc, coming off The Avengers ensemble secret sauce, & finally dipping our toes into cosmic MCU. Vol.2 is okay with skippable content. Vol.3 here is a weird trip with a nice way of saying goodbye.

p.s. not gonna lie, when I saw Linda Cardellini's name in the opening credits, I legit wondered, oh no, why is Hawkeye's wife in space now??
