Even Margaret Atwood had one.

It seems like something that a writer would experience once, or more, but yeah that's still awkward.

A certain scene in "This is Spinal Tap" comes to mind.

This feels like a bad way to deal with disappointment. People don't want to feel guilt tripped into engaging with you. Probably best to put on a face, thank the people that did show up and show support and advertise potentially doing it again in the future.

Probably best to put on a face, thank the people that did show up and show support and advertise potentially doing it again in the future. I mostly agree with this. However, there were 37 people who directly communicated to her that they'd be attending the event. The 35 who flaked (which is shitty, don't do that) deserve to be called out, privately. If she didn't have the means to do so without making a public spectacle of it, then suck it up, do some more networking (sans whining), send out more reminders as the date approaches, and hope for the best.

I once wandered into a bookshop where there was a signing event, and no-one was there. I think it was Christopher Paolini, but he seems too big a name, or too American. My memory fails me. Anyway, he came over chatting while I was browsing the shelves. Seemed like a nice fella, he was asking politely and in a self-deprecating way if I wanted a book, but I was really off sci-fi/fantasy at the time, and didn't want the expense. He claimed to be one of the biggest names in fantasy writing, especially since all the good writers had recently died.
