I don't know if there is already a thread on this film, but since I just saw it I wanted to write my own impression of it. Honestly, I didn't like it. I enjoyed the first film because there was a reason (kind of) behind everything he did, and the world they set up, of a kind of brotherhood of assassins, was interesting, but in this film they took it to ridiculous extremes. The film might have been an okay brainless action movie, but it went on for one hour too long. I got bored with one scene after another of him running away from bullets being fired at him from behind without him getting hit. You can only have the hero dodge so many bullets before it becomes not only repetitive, but ridiculous. Next to actors such as Ian McShane, Reeve's lack of acting talent was prominent. I heard Wick 3 is already in production - I certainly won't be watching it.

In the first film Ian McShane's character Winston warns John Wick that "You dip so much as a pinky back into this pond... you may well find something reaches out... and drags you back into its depths." The second film follows on this premise quite nicely. John's one man war against the Russian mafia makes Santino collect John Wick's debt to him. As for him not getting hit, he actually does get hit. Several times. He's just wearing the bullet proof suit. Just like Common's character is.

Yes he got minor hits, but come on - covering his face with his jacket? There were just too many ridiculous things happening.

Both films are pretty mindless action films. In the first one he kills like 75 people and some of his enemies seem to come to him instead of keeping their distance and try shoot him. Chapter 2 does what sequel should do and expands the universe and the action and the levels of ridiculousness are also expanded. But hey, to each his own. I for one I'm interested in seeing chapter 3. I don't think these films are masterpieces but they still are entertaining action flicks IMO.

I like some action films, for instance I love the Marvel films. When incredible things happen you expect them to kind of make sense. Yes, both Wick 1 and Wick 2 are mindless action films, but the second one had basically zero story and it was just one killing after another, on and on. I really don't understand why it made so much money when a film such as Robocop (the remake) flopped, and Edge of Tomorrow did just okay at the box office. (By the way, I'm happy that they are doing a prequel to Edge of Tomorrow.)

* fast-forwards through repetitive fight scenes, resumes normal viewing when things settle down briefly and characters converse, rewinds and rewatches Ian McShane scenes *

Interesting. I liked it quite a bit. I thought that it dragged a bit in the beginning-middle portion, but it really picked up.
I'd say that I liked it more than the first one, but just barely.

Not as fresh as the first one and hand-to-hand combat grunting really pissed me off.

Which makes it kind of ridiculous because if they all kill even a handful of people a year, there would be thousands of gunfights going on constantly. I do appreciate that they didn't just re-run the first movie, like "Oh no, he bought another dog and now somebody's killed that one, too!" And the fight choreography was very well done, for sure. But it all just fell a bit flat to me. It very much came across as "more of the same, but turned up to 11" to try and out-do the original." And the setup for the sequel promises to be even more that.

Exactly, there wasn't anything new. I'm getting tired of these 'humans with superhero-like abilities' films.

I find even the fight choreography repetitive, if you see an action scene ,then you saw it all. The most ridiculous fact is that there are a billion proffessional assassins after John Wick and not a single one of them thought about shooting for the head.almost as ridiculous as the opening scene where he is hit by the car 189 times and does not care. I think i'll skip the third one and rewatch Raid 1 and 2

I sort of agree. I liked the 1st one because it had an original twist on the revenge genre. I could undestand (but not justify) the character's motivation. I didn't like the 2nd one because nothing about its story was original. It was just another action thriller. I think that expanding on this brotherhood of assassins was one of the culprits.

A dissenting opinion.
John Wick: Chapter 2 / Chad Stahelski (2017). Again we find the retired master assassin for Russian mobsters (he’s not the Boogeyman, he’s who you send to kill the Boogeyman) being pulled back into the Life. Again we are in a fantasy underworld criminal society of violent people but who must obey certain rules and formalities. These rules are presided over by Winston (Ian McShane) who is the final arbiter of all disputes. The film opens on one of those rules. If you owe someone your life, you give them a Marker, a medallion with a spot of your blood inside. The person holding the Marker may use it at any time to demand any service. Ambitious crime family leader Santino D'Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio) has just such a Marker from John Wick. He demands that Wick assassinate his (Santino’s) sister (Claudia Gerini, excellent in her scene with Wick) who has a seat at the Table, which Santino wants. Against his will, Wick must carry out the task. Of course, he is betrayed at the moment of the killing and then must shoot, fight, and stab his way through hundreds of disposable minions led by chief hench-person, Ares (Ruby Rose). As with the first John Wick, I tried to keep tabs on the number of bodies that fell but lost count early on. We even get to see a demonstration of a feat mentioned in the first movie that John Wick once killed three men in a bar with just a #2 pencil.
Now...Keanu Reeves as John Wick. Whenever a thread on the old boards-which-we-do-not-name about who is the worst actor, Reeves was always an easy answer. But, especially as he has grown older, his acting, still low-key, has grown with him along with a commanding physical presence. As Wick fights his way thought tunnels and corridors, he leaps, rolls, turns, and kicks with an almost balletic grace – Reeves studied judo and jujitsu for his role. I liked this very much even though it is not usually the kind of film I appreciate. I do not care for most Hollywood-made action, esp. the comic/graphic novel variety. However, for reasons I only partly understand, I greatly enjoy Asian martial arts films. I think that is why the John Wick series appeals to me. Reeves and the army of stunt men he is up against perform with a kind of balletic grace which, coupled with takes that are longer than what is usual in U.S. action films, show that these performers actually have some serious Moves, much like Asian stars like Donnie Yen (it was nice to hear him speaking English in “Rogue One”), Tony Jaa, JeeJa Yanin, and Iko Uwais.

Haven't seen this one yet, but I thought the first John Wick was amazing.
