Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film.
FIRST TIME FILM VIEWING
Farha (2022, Darin J. Sallam) Netflix Emotional and sometimes intense story set in a village in Palestine. Based on true events, this is the film the Israeli apartheid state does not want you to see. One of the best films of the year. 7.5-8/10
The Long Haul (1957, Ken Hughes) UK noir starring American noir regular Victor Mature. Could’ve been leaner but still very effective. 6/10
Intolerable Cruelty (2003, Coen Brothers) Netflix The Coens took over this existing project rather than originate it but they did rewrite it and it feels like a Coens film. Just not a great one. 5.5/10
Christmas Bloody Christmas (2022, Joe Begos) Super low budget Christmas horror that actually starts more like a Linklater hangout movie before it becomes a holiday themed terminator movie. I preferred the hangout stuff to the horror stuff. It is quite lean at 85 minutes but with 20 to go I was ready for it to be over. It’s still worth a look but a more likeable lead could’ve helped. 5.5/10
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970, Billy Wilder) I know this one has its fans but it didn’t work for me. I founds it pretty stuff and overly talkie. 4/10
REPEAT MOVIE VIEWING
Carrie (1976, Brian De Palma) blu ray A classic horror with a great lead performance and superb visual direction. 8/10
Avanti! (1972, Billy Wilder) Fun enough latter day comedy from Wilder and Lemmon. 6-6.5
Along Came a Spider (2001, Lee Tamahori) Netflix Solid enough thriller that is well crafted but maybe a bit predictable. 6/10
REPEAT TV VIEWING
The Larry Sanders Show (1992, Season One) Was great revisiting this influential and funny show. Great TV

Not sure why I didn't connect with it before.

Only Tokyo story which I was pretty soft on Late Spring is the fifth one I've seen. Tokyo Story is another one I appreciated a lot more after a second viewing. Unfortunately it put me in no mood for any more from him. I prefer Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, kobayashi, shindo and Okamoto for old Japanese cinema

It's basically a waste of a fun concept. 5/10
Carrie (1976, Brian De Palma) My least favourite De Palma. Sissy Spacek is arguably excellent, but the whole thing feels just far too obvious and shrill for my taste. 3/10
Along Came a Spider (2001, Lee Tamahori) Monica Potter is really cute and Michael Wincott always makes for a good villain, but the film itself is sort of mediocre. 6/10

First Time Viewing
Carnival Of Souls (1962; Herk Harvey) - This classic is said to have inspired the films of George A. Romero and M. Night Shyamalan, but its historical importance aside I found it rather dull and predictable. 5/10
TV Narcos: Mexico - Season 1 (2018) - Not as good as the original series (I miss Wagner Moura as Pablo Escobar, although he does have a short cameo), but still gripping TV. 7.5/10
Mare Of Easttown (2021) - Kate Winslet is unsurpringly convincing as a "difficult" cop in this mini-series, and there is some decent support from the likes of Guy Pearce and Angourie Rice, but just like in Sharp Objects the crime plot is secondary to the character drama and ultimately just not that original or exciting. 5/10
Repeat Viewing
Nothing this week

First Time Viewing Carnival Of Souls (1962; Herk Harvey) - This classic is said to have inspired the films of George A. Romero and M. Night Shyamalan, but its historical importance aside I found it rather dull and predictable. 5/10 TV Narcos: Mexico - Season 1 (2018) - Not as good as the original series (I miss Wagner Moura as Pablo Escobar, although he does have a short cameo), but still gripping TV. 7.5/10 Mare Of Easttown (2021) - Kate Winslet is unsurpringly convincing as a "difficult" cop in this mini-series, and there is some decent support from the likes of Guy Pearce and Angourie Rice, but just like in Sharp Objects the crime plot is secondary to the character drama and ultimately just not that original or exciting. 5/10 Repeat Viewing Nothing this week Not watched anything from your list.

Hello again!
Yours:
Intolerable Cruelty (2003, Coen Brothers)
I liked it well enough but it is definitely a lesser Coen film. 6/10
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970, Billy Wilder)
Agreed. 4/10
Carrie (1976, Brian De Palma)
A wonderful adaptation that's honestly better than the novel. Very good. 8/10
Mine:
The Darjeeling Limited (Wes Anderson, 2007)
This is one of the few Wes Anderson movies I hadn't seen, so I'm glad to cross it off my list. I personally found it quite funny at times and the sentimentality of this one worked for me for the most part (I also love movies that take place mostly on trains so there's that too) but it's not quite up there with his best. 7/10
Infernal Affairs III (Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, 2003)
The final and easily worst of the Infernal Affairs movies. On one hand this feels like a better companion film to the second than the second did to the first (in terms of characters actions matching what we had been shown) but I found myself just not caring part of the way through. It wasn't suspenseful as the first, it didn't have the drama of the second… it was just there. 4/10
Killing (Shin'ya Tsukamoto, 2018)
"You'll soon bleed to death, so reflect on your life." I usually love Tsukamoto's films… I can't really say that about this one, though I liked and respected it. This is absolutely devastating deconstruction of the typical Samurai film. It plays so many of the tropes those who watch these films expect and it does so cleverly. It's a film about the act of killing, how it destroys and how it can be so easy for some. Despite the title, there is only one real action scene in it. It's mostly a chamber piece, so small in scale that it honestly comes off almost as a play at times… which is fascinating given how nature is shown throughout. It's quite possibly the most depressing of Tsukamoto's films as well, leaving me not only uncomfortable as it ended, but needing something light hearted to escape it. 7/10
