Intolerable Cruelty - 4/10 Carrie - 6/10 Along Came a Spider - 5/10 Mine: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) - 5/10
Average remake. Not the best or the worst. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006) - 6/10
Little better than the first remake. Dig (2022) - 6/10
Pretty entertaining thriller. Paradise City (2022) - 3/10
Bruce Willis and John Travolta star in this new action drama that really lacks suspense. Pennywise: The Story of It (2021) - 7/10
Good documentary on the 1990 film. Punisher: War Zone (2008) - 6/10
Pretty fun action flick. Inside Man: Most Wanted (2019) - 5/10
OK sequel. Ninja Assassin (2009) - 4/10
Bloody but forgettable action flick. The Accursed (2022) - 3/10
Dull horror film. Hope Floats (1998) - 2/10
Very boring romance film. Hardly could finish it. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) - 5.5 better than a lot of other franchise remakes but I wouldn’t watch again The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006) - I definitely saw at least the beginning of this, can’t remember whether I finished it

Hello again! Yours: Intolerable Cruelty (2003, Coen Brothers) I liked it well enough but it is definitely a lesser Coen film. 6/10 The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970, Billy Wilder) Agreed. 4/10 Carrie (1976, Brian De Palma) A wonderful adaptation that's honestly better than the novel. Very good. 8/10 Mine: The Darjeeling Limited (Wes Anderson, 2007) This is one of the few Wes Anderson movies I hadn't seen, so I'm glad to cross it off my list. I personally found it quite funny at times and the sentimentality of this one worked for me for the most part (I also love movies that take place mostly on trains so there's that too) but it's not quite up there with his best. 7/10 Infernal Affairs III (Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, 2003) The final and easily worst of the Infernal Affairs movies. On one hand this feels like a better companion film to the second than the second did to the first (in terms of characters actions matching what we had been shown) but I found myself just not caring part of the way through. It wasn't suspenseful as the first, it didn't have the drama of the second… it was just there. 4/10 Killing (Shin'ya Tsukamoto, 2018) "You'll soon bleed to death, so reflect on your life." I usually love Tsukamoto's films… I can't really say that about this one, though I liked and respected it. This is absolutely devastating deconstruction of the typical Samurai film. It plays so many of the tropes those who watch these films expect and it does so cleverly. It's a film about the act of killing, how it destroys and how it can be so easy for some. Despite the title, there is only one real action scene in it. It's mostly a chamber piece, so small in scale that it honestly comes off almost as a play at times… which is fascinating given how nature is shown throughout. It's quite possibly the most depressing of Tsukamoto's films as well, leaving me not only uncomfortable as it ended, but needing something light hearted to escape it. 7/10 The Darjeeling Limited (Wes Anderson, 2007)
I'm just not getting the appeal of Wes Anderson at all. 6/10
Infernal Affairs III (Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, 2003)
We completely agree on this one. 4/10

First Time Viewing Carnival Of Souls (1962; Herk Harvey) - This classic is said to have inspired the films of George A. Romero and M. Night Shyamalan, but its historical importance aside I found it rather dull and predictable. 5/10 TV Narcos: Mexico - Season 1 (2018) - Not as good as the original series (I miss Wagner Moura as Pablo Escobar, although he does have a short cameo), but still gripping TV. 7.5/10 Mare Of Easttown (2021) - Kate Winslet is unsurpringly convincing as a "difficult" cop in this mini-series, and there is some decent support from the likes of Guy Pearce and Angourie Rice, but just like in Sharp Objects the crime plot is secondary to the character drama and ultimately just not that original or exciting. 5/10 Repeat Viewing Nothing this week We are fairly aligned on my ratings but i've not seen any of yours I'm afraid Rav

Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film. FIRST TIME FILM VIEWING
Farha (2022, Darin J. Sallam) NetflixEmotional and sometimes intense story set in a village in Palestine. Based on true events, this is the film the Israeli apartheid state does not want you to see. One of the best films of the year. 7.5-8/10The Long Haul (1957, Ken Hughes)UK noir starring American noir regular Victor Mature. Could’ve been leaner but still very effective. 6/10Intolerable Cruelty (2003, Coen Brothers) NetflixThe Coens took over this existing project rather than originate it but they did rewrite it and it feels like a Coens film. Just not a great one. 5.5/10Christmas Bloody Christmas (2022, Joe Begos)Super low budget Christmas horror that actually starts more like a Linklater hangout movie before it becomes a holiday themed terminator movie. I preferred the hangout stuff to the horror stuff. It is quite lean at 85 minutes but with 20 to go I was ready for it to be over. It’s still worth a look but a more likeable lead could’ve helped. 5.5/10The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970, Billy Wilder)I know this one has its fans but it didn’t work for me. I founds it pretty stuff and overly talkie. 4/10REPEAT MOVIE VIEWINGCarrie (1976, Brian De Palma)blu rayA classic horror with a great lead performance and superb visual direction. 8/10Avanti! (1972, Billy Wilder)Fun enough latter day comedy from Wilder and Lemmon. 6-6.5Along Came a Spider (2001, Lee Tamahori) NetflixSolid enough thriller that is well crafted but maybe a bit predictable. 6/10REPEAT TV VIEWINGThe Larry Sanders Show (1992, Season One)Was great revisiting this influential and funny show. Great TVWEEKLY FILM AWARDSBEST FILM: Carrie BEST ACTOR: Jack Lemmon - Avanti! BEST ACTRESS: Sissy Spacek - Carrie BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Ashraf Barhom - Farha BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Tala Gammoch - Farha BEST EDITING: Paul Hirsch - Carrie BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Mário Tosi - Carrie BEST SCORE: Steve Moore - Christmas Bloody Christmas BEST SCRIPT: Lawrence D. Cohen - Carrie BEST DIRECTOR: Brian De Palma - Carrie 10/10 - Perfection (or as close to it as possible) 09/10 - An Excellent film 08/10 - A VERY Good film 07/10 - A Good film 06/10 - A Solid film 05/10 - An Average film 04/10 - Below Average film 03/10 - A mostly bad film 02/10 - A mostly terrible film 01/10 - Awful through and through 00/10 - Not only awful but offensive too Hi, Dark. Here I am. Yours: Intolerable Cruelty 6.5/10 I've seen it a long time ago. I thought it wasn't bad, but not great either. The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes 8/10 I actually liked it a lot. The cast was good. Carrie (1976) 9/10 Yeah. Love it. Classic. Along Came a Spider 5/10 Saw it a long time ago, I remember not liking it much. Mine: White Noise 7.5/10 It's Noah Baumbach's new movie, with Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig. It's about a college professor of Hitler studies and his family in the 80s, and the weird things that happen in their life, from a mysterious pill his wife takes secretly, to a crash that possible could have leaked a lethal toxic cloud. I enjoyed it actually. It's different from other Baumbach's films, it much more surreal. It's a bit of a mess, maybe, and it feels too long, IMO, but I thought it was really funny in a lot of moments. Adam Driver is great. Also, it's beautiful visually. I'm happy I caught it in a theatre. Vigilante 8/10 It's a movie from William Lustig, the director of Maniac Cop, with Robert Forster and Fred Williamson. It's about a wife whose kid gets murdered and his wife seriously injured during an assault by a street gang. It can't get no justice from the trial and he decides to join a gang of vigilantes to get his revenge. I liked it, I mean, it's kind of trahsy, but it's really well made. I lked the 80s vibe, the score, the atmosphere. Robert Forster and Fred Williamson were good. Also, the ending is insane. Break Up 9/10 It's an Italian movie from the 60s, Marco Ferreri directed it. It's with Marcello Mastroianni. It's about the head of a sweet factory who becomes obsessed with how much air can a baloon contain before it explodes. And it starts like just a thing it wonders, but it grows into an obsession. It's very difficult to describe, it's very surreal, I thought it was a blast, but it also gets quite dark, in its own way, and disturbing at times. It's really wild, I loved it. Marcello Mastroianni is great. I really loved the score too. The War of the Roses 7.5/10 It's Danny DeVito movie, with himself, Michael Douglas and Katherine Turner. It's about a wealthy couple, who after years of marriage, decide to divorce, and basically start a literally war with each other. I actually remembered not liking it much, I enjoyed it though, now. Although, the ending gets too preachy, IMO, I wonder if the studio imposed it, or something.

Vigilante - I sought this out years ago after I had seen the Maniac cop films. I do ot remember it very well but5 I gave it a 4.5 at the time, so must not have liked it much at all. The War of the Roses 7.5/10 I am a big fan, I don't remember the end being preachy. great performances from the leads.

Hi, Dark. I like most of Noah Baumbach's movies, so I'll definitely have to check out White Noise. The War of the Roses - Funny movie with good performances. 7.5/10 Yeah, I like Baumbach too. This one is really different, in style too. It's not one of his best, but it's worth seeing, IMO.

White Noise, you didn't like the trailers, or you're not a fan of the novel? Yeah, I like the Maniac Cop movies too. I was curious about Vigilante, then I read Tarantino is a fan and I decided to catch it. I'm glad I did. There's a car chase near the end that it's really good, IMO. The bit of The War of the Roses in the end, when the guy listening to the story decides to hold off the divorce and leaves the office, it was a bit too on the nose for me.

Didn’t like the trailer, I like Baumbach usually but not interested in this.
