RIP "Barry Lyndon" was one of the first movies I liked the year I got serious about movies. "Paper Moon" was the last thing I saw before leaving California in 2016, and liked it very much. "Love Story" is shit on a bit too much. Can you imagine him starring in "Rocky"?
I guess. Perhaps Ryan O'Neal could have played an Irish-American boxer with his in-ring skills, though Sylvester Stallone seems like ideal casting as Rocky Balboa. Stallone is also said to be extremely knowledgable about the sport and its history.
If Stallone and John Avildsen had wanted to cast an actor with serious boxing experience, Fred Ward might have been an interesting choice, though he'd been working in Italy. Charles Bronson was too old though he showed his skills as a bare-knuckle boxer in Walter Hill's 'Hard Times' (1975). Roy Scheider also had a good 10 years on guys like O'Neal and Ward. On the flipside, a guy like Tony Danza may have been too young at the time. A choice out of leftfield, though he's an actor trained in martial arts, would have been Ward's friend Scott Glenn who has Irish ancestry like O'Neal.
