A sad nutcase, who was to all intents and purposes apparently dead for some years before his physical demise. Of all the other photos, for some reason this one strikes me as the saddest; they look like such a group of ordinary Joes, and it's obvious that at least a couple of them are experiencing some nerves about going up. It must have been beyond horrific for their families, who were probably in attendance at the event, to witness this.

Since this was WWII, they probably wanted to show some courage in testing this craft for the boys fighting the war.

You can just look at the two heavier-set men on the right and almost tell that they're thinking "I owe this to those guys". That they're clearly both pretty scared themselves just makes it more heart wrenching.
