Finally picked up the 2003 CD remasters of a few John Barry James Bond scores, I had wanted for quite some time. And I think both the film and music of Goldfinger (1964), stands as my favorite pick of best film and theme of the entire franchise, even though Tom Jones gives Shirley Bassey a run for the money with the follow up in Thunderball (1965).
Anyway, speaking of Bassey, I know her vocal performance is the most famous version, but somehow this absolute bangin instrumental by Barry, hits real hard and heavy, almost like a heavy rock spaghetti western "outtake":

Basil Poledouris made some incredible and uforgettable movie themes back in the 80s, but few still manage to give me the chills, like the thundering intro while re-watching Conan the Barbarian (1982):

Vangelis and his legendary work for Blade Runner (1982), is of course not to leave out either:

I prefer Morriconeβs Three Mules for Sister Sarah over The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly with the fantasy-like medieval vibe and the βdonkey brays.β

Whatever happened to the great movie scores? They seem so interchangeable nowadays and lean to much on pop music.

Whatever happened to the great movie scores? They seem so interchangeable nowadays and lean to much on pop music. Having just seen the 80s documentary In Search of Tomorrow (2022), there is a similar question being brought up, and how much great and melodic themes and music that was made back in the 70s and specially the 80s, where you could easily remember, even the smaller or lesser known, but for the past 10-15 years or more, how many of the modern themes or scores can people really remember much of? I guess many of the composers back then, might have far bigger freedom and of course budget and time to work from, but on the other hand, some of the most well known movie themes (like The Terminator), came probably from not too well known musicians or artists, who had not all the time nor the money to make what they wanted, and yet somehow you had to take what few chances life have given you, to try and create a name for yourself, and Brad Fiedel sure hit off good with this one:

This one isn't very well-known, but I think it may be Morricone's best movie theme song.
