I read that they were inspired by the alien in Alien, which makes perfect sense. It sure doesn't in this movie though. I also read that they ran out of money near the end of filming, which would account for the bath toy sequence and that less-than-amazing killer cat stuff. They sure reached high with that kind of optimistic inspiration, specially towards what we ended up with instead. Would have love to find a better DVD than the one I got, which is a pretty old Cheezy Flicks release from the late 00s, but when I saw it at the movie store, I just had to bring it with me home, and it sure did not disappoint. A commentary section, some bonus features and yeah, if I get hold of a better Blu-ray version, I might just have to upgrade it.

Hideous! (1997) by Charles Band Well, another night, another "classic" Full Moon Feature movie, and that has been put up for free on Youtube, on their own channel. Anyway, two eccentric art collectors, are trying to get their slimy hands on the latest "beauty", just recently arisen from the sewers. The trouble however, is that this pricy item, suddenly gets its own thoughts and ideas, which means it wants something more out of life, than just to be put into a glass jar and put on display. At times it feels like a nice sleazy and cheesy throwback, to older Full Moon titles, like Ghoulies (1984) or Puppet Master (1989), also you cannot ignore a certain similarity (probably due to having some of the same actors) with Head of the Family (1996). Throw in an old castle, in some remote area and a bunch of rather interesting characters, you have yourself a 80-85 minutes of so-so b-movie fun, but sadly it does end up becoming slowed down after a while. Not every line is funny nor amusing, and this could have benefitted with a bit more action. However, there is a nice bunch of beautiful women here, specially the blonde bodyguard, who seems to have a way of sitting on top of tables, wearing very little clothes. And there is a scene where she wanders outdoors in the cold winter freeze, wearing nothing but a gorilla mask and some hotpants, while talking in the same voice style to Baby Oopsy Daisy from the first Demonic Toys film. Not sure if it was the same actress, but something felt very similar in tone. Another funny detail, is having the foul mouthed cab driver Benny, from Total Recall (1990) "Hey man, I got five kids to feed" as one of the main leads. 5/10

Death Becomes HerA delightfully mean-spirited, campy horror comedy. With its luscious cinematography, slick production design, eye-catching costumes, melodramatic Alan Silvestri score, cartoonish gore effects, and jet black sense of humor, it feels much like a big budget, feature length Tales from the Crypt episode in all the very best eays. (It beats the hell out of Bordello of Blood and Ritual, that's for damned sure. It can't really touch Demon Knight, though...) It's a grand old bitchfest in the best tradition of the likes of Bette Davis vs. Joan Crawford or Joan Collins vs. Linda Evans. Lifelong frenemies Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn wage a decades long battle for the love of schlubby milquetoast Bruce Willis. When an eternal youth/immortality potion enters into the mix, the catfight reaches true, glorious heights of mayhem and Looney Tunes-style violence ensues. Streep and Hawn are in towering, vicious form as the two murderous shrews at the story's center and it is an utterly cruel joy to watch their verbal and physical sparring matches. Behind these two phenomenal performances, Willis actually manages to hold his own- hamming up the character's total wimpy impotence and sending up his tough guy image quite effectively. The trio is given excellent support by a slinky, supernaturally seductive Isabella Rossellini, a twitchy and swishy Ian Ogilvy, a hilariously morbid unbilled appearance from Sydney Pollack, and a whole host of undead "cameos" from the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol, Elvis, Jim Morrison, and James Dean. (Zemeckis sure does love resurrecting dead celebrities, doesn't he...?) But while the cast truly shines, the real stars here are those wild special effects. True, the CGI is quite crude. However much like a movie like Terminator 2, it employs that wise, sparing use of CGI as a very limited tool to augment practical and makeup effects. And I'd argue that compared to movies made even a few years later that relied more fully on the still-burgeoning technology, it holds up drastically better. (Compare this movie to the likes of Dragonheart or Spawn or The Mummy if you think I'm wrong.) It's a wonderfully pretty piece of craftsmanship on every level- a delicious, rich dark chocolate with a pure arsenic filling.

The Raven 1963
Dr. Bedloe: Oh it was the result of too much wine. I became abusive and then I became critical of his magical abilities. Then I challenged him to a duel. Dr. Craven: Of magic? Dr. Bedloe: Well the whole thing was completely unfair. I was just getting my magical equipment ready and then all he did was a few gestures in here with his hands. Dr. Craven: You mean he only used his hands? Dr. Bedloe: Yes, what of it? Dr. Craven: Ah then his skill is far greater than I ever had dreamed of. Dr. Bedloe: Far greater? He was cheating. Dr. Craven: Oh no. No Dr. Bedloe. The magic by gesture of the hands is the most advanced sorcery. Dr. Bedloe: Oh I don't agree with you at all. I can't agree. If I would have been sober, which I admit doesn't happen very often but--it would have been an entirely different story.

Day ShiftFun, gory horror/comedy actioner about professional vampire hunter Jamie Foxx rejoining a slayers' union he was ousted from in an desperate attempt to make more money to support his estranged wife and daughter. Assigned to the titular day shift, he soon finds himself slaying whole nests of vampires and saddled with a dorky, inexperienced partner (Dave Franco). It's pretty lightweight; but it's funny, energetically paced, it's got weird contortionist vampires, and Snoop Dogg stealing the show as a badass cowboy vampire hunter. Worth a watch.

Cocaine Bear, I suppose. I don’t really recommend it. My feeling is it does not satisfy on either the horror or comedy front.
