LA Lakers are the most popular sports team in America as new study sees them top the charts ahead of Warriors and Yankees... but David Beckham has a LONG way to go as his Inter Miami are listed 117th out of 120!
BEN NAGLE FOR DAILYMAIL.COM PUBLISHED: 12:15 EST, 15 November 2022 | UPDATED: 12:17 EST, 15 November 2022
The Los Angeles Lakers are the most popular sports franchise across America's four major leagues, according to a new study - but it's bad news for David Beckham and his fledgling Inter Miami team.
In a huge piece of research covering the top 120 teams in MLB, MLS, NFL and NBA, the Lakers have come out on top, with their historical pull seemingly outweighing a difficult few seasons on the basketball court.
They are followed in the rankings by their NBA rival Golden State Warriors - who have enjoyed a more successful time on the paint in recent years - while baseball's New York Yankees come out third. THE TOP 10 1. Los Angeles Lakers (NBA) 2. Golden State Warriors (NBA) 3. New York Yankees (MLB) 4. Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB) 5. San Francisco 49ers (NFL) 6. Dallas Cowboys (NFL) 7. Philadelphia Phillies (MLB) 8. New England Patriots (NFL) 9. Kansas City Chiefs (NFL) 10. Cincinnati Bengals (NFL)
The study makes for less good reading from an MLS point of view, with soccer heading in the right direction in the US, but still languishing well behind the traditional powerhouse sports in the country.
Indeed, the bottom section of the list is made up entirely of soccer teams, with Vancouver Whitecaps 120th of 120. Above them are New York City - still struggling despite winning the MLS Cup in 2021, while Houston Dynamo are just above them.
Fourth from bottom, perhaps surprisingly, are Inter Miami, who can only manage 117th on the list despite being owned by David Beckham - one of the world's biggest names - and having been linked with a move for Lionel Messi.
The list has been worked out by odds comparison experts Sidelines.io, who analyzed each team's number of followers, mentions, engagement rate, average likes and average attendance.
In basketball, the least popular team is the Charlotte Hornets, NFL's strugglers are the Houston Texans, while Oakland Athletics are bottom when it comes to MLB.
Overall, the top 10 is dominated by NFL teams, who occupy five places, despite not having any entries in the top four.
The San Francisco 49ers are perhaps surprisingly the most popular of all NFL teams, shortly followed by the Dallas Cowboys, while the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals all also make the top 10.
The Philadelphia Phillies, fresh from their tilt at the World Series, are seventh overall, while the Los Angeles Dodgers come in fourth - just behind the Yankees.
On the subject of the Yankees, the Bronx Bombers are far and away the most popular sports team in New York, with the next-best New York Giants down in 19th, and the Jets a lowly 35th.

I love him! He's becoming a cocky stone cold killer and he can back it up Loved a couple of weeks ago when a reporter asked him about taking advantage of a 'window' - And he said something along the lines of 'My whole career is the window' He's great - would love a Philly/Cincy SB Jalen/DeVonta ('Bama - even though Jalen went on to OU) vs. Burrow/Chase (LSU) - SEC War

I have to question the 49ers as the most popular NFL team
Any particular reason why they would be?
Been a long time since Montana/Young/Rice - I really don't see any young sensation a younger fan may gravitate towards like a Mahomes or Burrow

I’m biased as a Red Sox fan, but I have trouble believing they aren’t in the top 10. I feel like I meet Red Sox fans from all over the country. I actually live in NYC and I even meet Red Sox fans here.

That's one of the first things I noticed that we're (Phillies) more popular than the BoSox I love it's listed - but I also question it Must be based on our World Series Run and Brycie

Does anyone believe that there are really any long-term, real-deal, die-hard Warriors fans? I certainly don't.

I actually live in NYC and I even meet Red Sox fans here. There is a zero percent chance that the Phillies and Bengals are in the top ten most popular teams in the US. In fact, there is a zero percent chance that the Bengals are one of the top 16 most popular teams in the NFL.

Just off the top of my head: the Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, Niners, Packers, Bears, Vikings, Steelers, Patriots, Chiefs, Raiders, and Broncos have got to be more popular and that's just the NFL.

It's now the most valued NBA team. People like winners. I don't see anything wrong with that.

In baseball, the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs and Dodgers. In football, the Cowboys, Steelers, 49ers and Patriots. In basketball, the Lakers, Celtics and Bulls (still). I'm basing this just by conversations I've had with a lot of sports fans I've met through work and the internet, all through the country and worldwide. I might have missed some, but these seem to be the teams have have large fan bases that transcend regional love.

That list is bullshit. There's no way the Blue Jays are the most popular team in RI. I also don't buy the Canadiens being the most popular team in Vermont, but I could attempt an explanation for it. But every Boston team is more popular in RI than the fucking Blue Jays. The Blue Jays?! Taken with the Raptors results in the deep south, it makes me think the firm who came up with these results is from Toronto.

There has to be a better way of answering this question than "analyzing search data." Like, I don't know... talking to people?

Mets in New Jersey? Ha! A couple of years ago they weren't the most popular baseball team in any zip code in the country. And fans aren't fickle. It's Yankees in the more populated north, Phillies in the south.
It will be interesting to see if the Jets get more traction than the Giants now.

Doodgers, Yankees, and Lakers make sense completely. Surprised Redwings or Maple leafs aren't here actually.
