Hundreds of Marlon Brando fans in the 1950s were probably thrilled to show their friends the autograph they received signed "Best Wishes, Marlon Brando." There was one problem with these autographs, though. What was it?

They were actually fake ... this was determined because the signature was legible

Hundreds of his genuine autographs would not have been available because ....
he rarely signed autographs his checks became sought after collector's items.
His checks were often never cashed because the autograph was more valuable for resale than the amount of the check

Fans mistook some bum in the street (I think his name was Paul or something) for Marlon, and the guy wrote them the phony autograph. When anyone asked him why he did it, he said "It makes me feel like a new man."

When anyone asked him why he did it, he said "It makes me feel like a new man." Correct! And that bum was better-looking than Brando on any day (a better actor, too) so it's hard to believe they could have made such a mistake.

It was Paul Newman who signed them.
I came a bit late there.

It was Paul Newman who signed them. Legend is that .... once he became famous, Newman refused to sign his own autographs theoretically because he had been asked for them while using the facilities in the men's room ...

he rarely signed autographs his checks became sought after collector's items. His checks were often never cashed because the autograph was more valuable for resale than the amount of the check Marc Chagall supposedly employed this same tactic, paying for even his smallest purchases by check.
