Troy Donahue was born on this day. The teen idol of the early '60s made his big splash in 1959, with Sandra Dee, in the super soap romance, "A Summer Place." Troy & Sandra were the teen dream team of their era, supported here by a great supporting cast: Dorothy McGuire, Arthur Kennedy, Richard Egan, and scene stealer Constance Ford as Sandra's monster mother. Here's to Troy, when he was 23: ricksrealreel.blogspot.com/2019/08/a-summer-place-still-steamy-silly-1959.html

Thanks for your post and comments, Rick. I recently just re-watched this film. It's one that I've loved for years and years for so many of the reasons you mention; also because it was shot in Pacific Grove, Ca. where I lived for a while, so watching it's a little like going home to me. I also read and loved the Sloan Wilson novel, and I give a lot of credit to Delmer Daves for crafting the admittedly "super soap romance," into something ultimately a bit more meaningful, thanks to the depth of Wilson's novel, I think -- and the seriousness all the actors brought to the screen, including Constance Ford, the one so easy to hate. Even Donahue, whom I never considered a fine actor, was excellent in his break-out role. Oh, and then there's the score! One of Steiner's finest and most memorable for sure (with some help from Percy Faith, of course).

I was in my impressionable, early teens when A Summer Place was released. And, I must say that I watch it, from time-to-time, even today ... with a slightly different perspective. Other Troy Donohue films, Susan Slade and Parrish, followed and had similar plots/themes. I loved all of them! Later, when I began dating, my father's first - and strictly enforced rule - was "Not with Troy Donahue!". He said that he didn't like the odds.
