moviemouth True, but at the same time... i don't really pay attention to critics as after you have seen plenty of movies you can generally tell what your going to watch and what your going to avoid. but i guess there is probably a portion of the public that relies on critics to say what's worth watching and what's not(?) as i would imagine many people have a limited amount of time to watch movies and unless they seen a lot of movies and know what they generally like etc then they probably need some way to figure out whether a movie is worth spending their limited amount of free time on. Yes, critics are very helpful for the general public.
Critics are also very useful when looking for old obscure movies, especially foreign language films. There is such a vast amount of movies out there that if it weren't for critics I would even know where to begin. Siskel & Ebert's Top 10 lists for example is a great resource, as are critic's lists of the greatest movies ever made.
Everybody is making lists like that.

At some point the reviews don't matter. Otherwise Ghostbusters (2016) would have been the next Force Awakens at the box office or The Nice Guys the new Lethal Weapon.

There is a point.
RT has helped me avoid many bad movies and has gotten me to give good movies a chance that I wasn't very interested in before hand. I largely rely on RT to guide me as to what movies to watch and it usually works out in my favor. Don't take this to mean I don't watch movies that get bad ratings, I just don't go see them at the theater unless they are movies I am super excited for. I stupidly ignored the critics regarding Suicide Squad.
I should have listened to the critics for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. I thought it looked like fun but boy was I wrong.
On the flip side I would have never went to see Moonlight or Lion at the theater if not for the very positive reviews. I also wouldn't have been in such a hurry to see Ex Machina at the theater. I didn't think the trailer made it look very appealing but it ended up being very good.
Of course there are many movies I dislike that got very good reviews and many movies I like that got bad reviews but RT is a helpful guide.
Doubt it's more helpful than the IMDB comment section was or any blog. From experience I trust critics more than random people on imdb, but they essentially serve the same purpose. Everyone on imdb just fancies themselves an unpaid critic anyway. If professional critics didn't exist than Hollywood would just blame imdb for the reason their crappy movies don't do well at the BO. The actual imdb ratings are often unreliable on initial release because almost every big budget movie starts out with an 8/10 or higher.

Plus critics see hundreds of movies a year, whereas the general movie goer doesn't. The more movies that are seen the more helpful the list will be.

They don't complain when the critics make a rehashed horror movie a hit by praising it simply because it has a black director and cast. They can't have it both ways.

What came first, the bad movie or the bad review of it? Yeah, people saw the reviews and avoided. If the movies weren't bad, there wouldn't have been bad reviews. Plenty of good movies that has gotten bad reviews and plenty of bad movies that has gotten good reviews. So i don`t take much notice to it anyway a person should judge a movie for themselves. And not let other people judge it for them. It's pretty seldom when a good movie has gotten outright bad reviews, and vice versa. Someone mentioned Blade Runner, but the version released in 1982 is not the version everyone loves.

Saw Pirates today. An entirely forgettable movie, just re-doing the exact same story the last couple of movies did. It didn't offend me, but neither did it entertain me. But they got my money, so yay them, I guess.
Baywatch I didn't bother with, because 1) it's a comedy. WTF? Baywatch was never a comedy, at least not intentionally. And 2) no Pamela Anderson quality boobage. How in the holy hell do you make a Baywatch movie and underdo the boobage?

Boobs are Baywatch's raison d'être. Someone should be fired.

they made up for it with wang. That's hardly a fair trade off. I think they seriously misunderstood their target audience. Then again maybe that's why the Rock and that other guy seemed so fond of each other other in the trailers.

I haven't seen either of these, but everyone I know who has seen "Pirates" has loved it. My friends that just go to movies for fun and my die-hard movie pals liked it equally.
Critics are snobs. That makes some movies impossible for them to like. Not to mention that modern-day critics almost never even mention the ACTUAL filmmaking behind the movie. All they talk about is face-level, trivial aspects that any fifth grader can see.
I'm a little bitter towards critics. If you couldn't tell.

I trust a random imdb guys who watched a lot of movies form a lot genres and places more than a critic. I never used IMDB for the newest, biggest movies. Everybody is making lists like that. Yes and both serve the same purpose. The more sources of information the better.

Hobbysts do the same.
