What came first, the bad movie or the bad review of it? Yeah, people saw the reviews and avoided. If the movies weren't bad, there wouldn't have been bad reviews.

I'm sure that's part of the reason. The whole point of having critics is to let people know what may not be worth their time and money.

But see I thought Pirates was a fun movie. I haven't seen Baywatch, but the audience score is like in the 70's I think. That's quite a disconnect. Baywatch may have been a fun movie for all I know. I don't know if I'd agree that critics are the problem, but in a way I kinda think so. Remember how critics trashed Blade Runner and The Thing (the John carpenter one) back in the day? Well now they are both looked at as great movies!!! I think part of the problem with critics is instead of enjoying the movies they look for problems (hint "critic = criticize) with the movie. I think critics need to take a step back and enjoy the movies.

Well the audience dissipated for pirates and Baywatch didn't look good at all.

Audiences are down across the country. Ticket prices continue to increase. Hollywood pumps out tired franchise sequel after sequel/reboot/remake. Do the math.

So stupid. Studios have been marketing these films for months & months - critics had nothing to do with the fact barely anyone wanted them.

moviemouthTrue, but at the same time... i don't really pay attention to critics as after you have seen plenty of movies you can generally tell what your going to watch and what your going to avoid. but i guess there is probably a portion of the public that relies on critics to say what's worth watching and what's not(?) as i would imagine many people have a limited amount of time to watch movies and unless they seen a lot of movies and know what they generally like etc then they probably need some way to figure out whether a movie is worth spending their limited amount of free time on.

Plenty of good movies that has gotten bad reviews and plenty of bad movies that has gotten good reviews. So i don`t take much notice to it anyway a person should judge a movie for themselves. And not let other people judge it for them.

They shouldn't be getting angry at critics (well they should), they should get angry at people dumb enough to actually listen to them. Now I'm not saying whether these 2 movies are good or not, as I have not seem them and am in no rush to, I am saying people need to understand that critic reviews don't mean much and should never be trusted.

Rising ticket prices, too many other entertainment options, and in the case of Baywatch, a studio hitching itself to the wrong horse (figuratively speaking)- those are the things to blame.

I think you need to understand that many critics didn't think there was much to enjoy. Enjoyment can't be forced. You either enjoy a movie or you don't.
Speaking as someone who likes the first 3 POTC movies, On Stranger Tides isn't much fun. A movie that is made to be mindless entertainment that fails to be fun is the worst kind of movie.
Critics think Furious 7 is fun, so critics do sit back and enjoy the ride when the ride is actually entertaining.
Do I need to say more?

RT has helped me avoid many bad movies and has gotten me to give good movies a chance that I wasn't very interested in before hand. I largely rely on RT to guide me as to what movies to watch and it usually works out in my favor. Don't take this to mean I don't watch movies that get bad ratings, I just don't go see them at the theater unless they are movies I am super excited for. I stupidly ignored the critics regarding Suicide Squad.
I should have listened to the critics for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. I thought it looked like fun but boy was I wrong.
On the flip side I would have never went to see Moonlight or Lion at the theater if not for the very positive reviews. I also wouldn't have been in such a hurry to see Ex Machina at the theater. I didn't think the trailer made it look very appealing but it ended up being very good.
Of course there are many movies I dislike that got very good reviews and many movies I like that got bad reviews but RT is a helpful guide.

Yes, critics are very helpful for the general public.
Critics are also very useful when looking for old obscure movies, especially foreign language films. There is such a vast amount of movies out there that if it weren't for critics I would even know where to begin. Siskel & Ebert's Top 10 lists for example is a great resource, as are critic's lists of the greatest movies ever made.

Wait, was there peoples who thought Baywatch would be good? I am surprised that there were people that thought 21 Jump Street would be good. I thought that movie looked like garbage but it got good reviews.

Doubt it's more helpful than the IMDB comment section was or any blog.
