In 1967, Noel Clarence Hardy vanished from Dublin when he was 30 years old. He had been a voluntary patient at St. Brendan's Mental Hospital and had been seen for the last time in the Grangegorman area of Dublin. Over the decades, his family never stopped looking for him. Investigation by the West Midlands Police a few years back showed that Noel had been living and working near Coventry, UK around 1975. More research showed that Noel had received a benefits claim from a homeless hostel in the city in 1988.
More recent info shows that Noel had been living in the UK the whole time (first under his own name, then under an assumed name). He died in Staffordshire in 1997, of natural causes. The case is officially closed now and his family has been notified.
I'm glad that his family finally has answers, though they'll have to live with the knowledge that he deliberately walked away from them, for whatever reason. When evidence turned up that he had been living in the UK in the 70s his grand-nephew was hoping to establish contact with him but obviously that won't happen now.
