Forgot about this one. It's a hoot. Hard to beat 'Chinese communists tunneling beneath the Earth to plant nuclear bombs under major U.S. cities' as far as paranoia goes.

Himmel ohne Sterne, Sky Without Stars (1955) West Germany. Directed and written by Helmut KautnerWidowed Anna Kaminski is a worker in the Soviet-occupied eastern zone. Her son, whom she can no longer care for, lives with the in-laws, just a few kilometers from the border, in the western zone. Risking her life, Anna secretly steals across the patrolled border at night for regular visits, she is helped one eventful evening by Carl a border guard from the Western zone, the two become friends… The western sectors, controlled after the war by France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, were merged on 23 May 1949 to form the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). the Soviet Zone became the German Democratic Republic (GDR), informally known as West Germany and East Germany. An excellent film, seeking humanity beyond all ideologies. The film was shot in the FRG during the Cold War, however Kautner does not take sides. Under the guise of melodrama the esteemed director boldly depicts the paranoia, division and scars still festering in once close communities following the war. The Cold War border a physical and ideological barrier hindering the healing process.
