I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that joke was not racist.
As Chris Rock once asked "did he have hate in his heart when he said it?"
So, did he intend to hurt someone? Nope
Did he intend to offend anyone? Nope
Did it come from a place of hate? Nope
Now I don't know much about Bill Maher, his show doesn't air here in Britain AFAIK, so for all I know he could be a massive racist, I don't know, all I can say is I don't think that joke is racist (if you can call it a joke).
Guys like Louis CK, Larry David, George Carlin have earned 'nigger privileges" because they are funny and are able to do race related material without coming across as racists. The trouble is though with 'nigger privileges' is you don't know you've earned 'nigger privileges' until you utter the word 'nigger' in public and have got black people in the audience laughing. So it is a big risk, if the joke falls flat, you might get hung! Clearly Bill Maher thought he had earned 'nigger privileges', but turned out he hadn't.

He assumed since he only dates black girls and is in a perpetual liberal OUTRAGE aimed at anyone not also a silly liberal he would get a free pass. How the hell did he put in all that time between all them thick thighs and still be so clueless about how they would react?

He's a millionaire liberal. It's almost a requirement for him to date a variety of races. It's not like he's dating Lashoniquia from down the block though.

Maher is an annoyingly hypocritical clueless douchebag but let's face it, most liberals are. That said the guy has gone down on more black women than most white liberals have even spoken with and that includes when y'all ask for the check. That kind of sincerity has got to earn him a free pass, right? Granted that's only like 5 black women but still. I'm kidding of course. I think Bill should be crucified for using the worst word in the history of man. Literally crucified. On his own show. It's awesome to see the rabid leftists attack their own leaders. I think the joke was poor, but I also feel that he was trying to think of something witty to say off-the-cuff. As a result, a series of unfortunate words came out of his mouth. I doubt he would have gone for that "joke" if the situation was scripted.
To play Devil's Advocate...he is a comedian, so he should be able to think fast on his feet and improvise better.
