^ I'm just curious, has anybody here read the above referenced books? Seems ironic the schools say they're perfectly acceptable for kids to read, but don't want the parents reading them out loud because it's offensive material. How about this play? Anybody here read this in middle school, junior high? Or do the 'I'm an adult and reading children's books is beneath me' crowd consider these to be children's books? I have read Milk and Honey. I have read the handmaid's tale and the testaments. The book Push became the movie Precious. Bet the kids have seen that. Me and Earl and the Dying girl - also a movie. Bet the kids have seen that. This is all hypocritical to keep children innocent when they have ready access to guns. These parents don't want them to read about anything 'real' and push for book bans for books that talk about drugs (cuz kids don't take those), grief (cuz with school shootings and other violence in the school kids never face that), poverty (nothing to see here, move along), abuse (again, nothing to see here) or any other "real" or painful subject. No, I didn't read some of the newer books when I was in high school because they weren't published. But Judy Blume started publishing and some people wanted everything 'banned'. talking about puberty? nope. dating? nope. doing things behind your parents' backs? nope. Because nobody has done any of these things - ever. The whole argument is just tiresome - and boring, truth be told. The point I'm trying to make here is that these "classics" were all challenged. In Catcher, Holden lies to his parents (challenge to authority), goes looking for a prostitute (sex!) and swears - all reasons to ban. Brave new World is all about artificially created babies, a population that is constantly high and that participates in virtual sex. Even Romeo and Juliet has sex, LOTS of it - the language is disgusting, if we're going down that road. Actually, if we're going to push that far, never teach Shakespeare - all of it is filthy. And, so, we remove these things. Are the parents going to step in? Can guarantee that most will not. Heard recently that a bath in Pepsi will prevent pregnancy if you did it unprotected. Which was probably done - the unprotected part, that is. Sure, limit your own offspring to read/watch/hear whatever YOU want them to. Keep away from everybody else's. Do you know what a teen's biggest fear is? That their parents will find out what they really do in school.

You're aware that adult prisoners are not allowed to read everything that's printed, they can't have access to anything overly violent OR sexual, which would include some of these oh so fine porn books school kids are being allowed to read but their parents are silenced when they repeat certain passages at the school board meetings. Do you think it'd be perfectly acceptable to let rapists and pedophiles read some of these books, like the ones that oh so graphically detail 7 year old girls being raped by their fathers? And if not, why is it okay for kids to read them? Those are adults, they've already done all that stuff, so it's hardly going to be anything they don't already know about but they're still not allowed to have access to it.

So all those teen girls who find out they're pregnant and go 'OMG, my mom will kill me!', they got pregnant AT school? That's what you're saying? Otherwise, what they really do at school is not their biggest fear, it's their parents finding out what they really do at any time of the day anywhere.

It's interesting you made the link to teen girls. I said teens in general. Of course they never want their parents to know what they do "at school". Duh.

Yes, I am aware that prisoners can't read what they want. This was made clear to me when I was approached to provide books for a female prison library. They can't read about anything that they went to jail for and no books that are hard cover (as they would be a weapon). So, let's limit kids to the same, sure. It's all rainbows and unicorns and nobody poops, or pees because even Captain Underpants is challenged.

It's not interesting, it's biology, teen boys can't get pregnant, and teen pregnancy is top of the list of things they're terrified their parents will find out. So is that a yes, teens ARE having sex in school and getting pregnant in school? Gee, let's give them more porn to read then starting in grade school/middle school, that makes so much sense.

Did you ever stop to wonder why this is the most depressed generation of young people in the world? Oh let me guess, it's the guns, it's not because young minds have more adult shit dumped on them than they're ready to deal with, right? Here's a thought, since 2/3 of students can't even read on grade level, the problem/issue isn't that they need more hardcore porn to read to stimulate them.

You guess wrong. Two years of pandemic and online teaching. Social isolation even when they are in a crowd. Too much time on their phones. Social media and the AI algorithms that keep them hooked on that social media and lead them down into ever deeper spirals where they are fed more of what they have looked at previously. The more time they spend online, the narrower their focus and opinions. I do not know of any generation of children that has had it easy. Young minds have always had to deal with things that they were not ready for: poverty, war, work, migration. Every generation has had its challenges.

None of which translates to 'kids will benefit from reading graphic depictions of a 7 year old girl being raped by her father', which was TWO of the books read at those school board meetings. And if you actually listen, several of them depict coerced/forced sex as a good thing, 'if she's crying just shove your dick in her mouth'. Kids need to read that, seriously? That's going to benefit them how? That's going to stimulate their minds how? That's an escape for them how? That's going to prepare them for the real world how? That *shouldn't* be allowed to grown men who are rapists and pedophiles in prison *why*?

"Perfectly fine for children, but silence any parents reading it before the school board, it's beneficial to kids but it must be kept secret from the parents." Makes total sense, right?
Somebody made a fair point. Since schools can't serve alcohol in the cafeterias to students, it must mean they are prohibitionists, only someone who wants to BAN alcohol would forbid kids getting a beer with their lunch. They are DEPRIVING those kids of a well rounded life, they're GOING to drink, so they might as well start in school, right? After all you KNOW they can get that and far stronger stuff at home, so the schools might as well be providing it too.

I don't believe in book bans, I also shudder at the "re-editing" of books, i.e. The Dahl books where words such a fat are being eliminated and now the Ian Fleming books are having "offensive parts removed." If someone is so offended by a book, a movie, a TV show etc., they should just avoid it. I don't want someone else to decide what I am allowed to read, watch or listen to. Maybe whoever is going after all this "offensive " material should start deleting all the offensive stuff in the Christian Bible. This world is becoming very fascist, it scares me. The difference is that the rights owners are doing the "re-editing" of their own volition, while the books bans are being brought about by politicians abusing their power. Yet, guess which action leads to outrage by "centrist, both sides are bad, I just like small government" people online and which one meets with deafening silence.

LOLing at the fact that you have so much time on your hands that you can keep fishing about online to dredge up these nutjobber videos to wallpaper the thread with. Perhaps you ought to invest some of that free time in reading books. Perhaps even some of those banned books. Your mind might be expanded. Or it might explode. Either way, it would have led to time well invested, something which can't be said for those vids.

I've read several so called 'banned books', none of which contained child porn/child rape/incest/violent rape incest, etc. I don't know why you think anybody's mind would need to be expanded with that, but if we won't allow it to grown men in prison, why is it perfectly acceptable for school kids? And if it's perfectly acceptable and beneficial, why aren't parents allowed to read it out loud for the school boards?

I didn’t know kids even read books anymore.
I remember in the last season of Law & Order in one episode they referenced the drag queen story hour thing, got a guy who dresses up as a woman saying it makes reading FUN for kids. Yeah nooooo, 5-6-7 year old boys want robots and dinosaurs and ninjas, not men wearing 5 foot hair, stripper heels and outfits that end at the crotch. The Pagemaster made reading fun for kids, Wishbone made reading fun for kids. And the thing that kills me is people always insist kids TODAY are smarter than any generation of kids before them, that's why movies today have to be full of poop jokes, because they're just so much more intelligently made than the stupid kids' movies of yesteryear like Matilda, E.T., 101 Dalmatians, The Neverending Story, Peter Pan, etc.

Here's a thought, are the people crying about so called 'book bans' all up in arms that children can't read Mein Kempf? Or is that actually on the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th grade school reading list?
