SIDEWINDER 1 1977 - corporate advertising executive Susan Howard - I first noticed her in Moonshine County Express and thought how good she was in a major part. I watched Petrocelli because of her but she has such a bad role in that. Not the case with this. She is the sister of Alex Cord who also has a better than average part as a laid-back millionaire who wants motorbike rider Michael Parks to spearhead his new design. The funny thing is that she despises Parks--they have nothing in common--but after Cord is killed in an accident, she has to assume the role of boss and spend more time around him and Marjoe Gortner--the other bike rider. This is an unusual film--it was not a big studio and not a Corman-level exploitation film either--and the message of the end is that she is better off leaving the corporate world for an unstable life on the road, riding bikes with Parks.
It was co-written by a woman writer too. At times it feels like a throwback to the 1930s or 40s because of the concentration on the man-woman dynamic rather than a plot about winning a race or beating someone.

Niguruma no uta, Song of the Cart (1959) Japan Dir. Satsuo Yamamoto. Based upon a novel by author/ activist Tomoe Yamashiro, Niguruma no uta was written by her in 1955, active in agrarianism she was an advocate on behalf of women workers and peasant farmers in rural communities. Cart Song is a moving epic film that follows the life of Seki (Yūko Mochizuki). Working hard labor for survival she transports goods between rural communities in a hand-drawn wooden cart. Over the years Seki raises a family while on the move, never losing her strength or dignity in the face of the many social obstacles and hardships she endures. The film opens with this heartfelt citation. " This film was created by the hands of 3,200,000 farm women... When all human beings acknowledge each other as human let the precious joy that results be universal. When this joy lives forever in the hearts of women and is handed down to daughters who become mothers then tomorrow will not just repeat today but be a new beginning...With these thoughts in our hearts we made this film ".

Patricia Neal, radio reporter, in A Face In The Crowd (1957) One of my favorites, Count. A prescient film about the power of the media that was definitely ahead of its time.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie 1969 has been mentioned, but the school had a woman principal too...
