I wonder if they could sneak in a 3 game series for the finale. I also wonder, they'd probably get stronger buzz in more baseball engaged cities like Boston or St. Louis? Would they ever try that, mid March?? I think a three game final is needed. No baseball competition ends in a winner take all game. This isn't soccer.
I've seen some people think that baseball in the Summer Olympics will be another WBC. It's back as an Olympic sport, not in 2024 but in 2028. But there's no fucking way that MLB will shut down a season for the Olympics. I very much doubt NPB would, the Japanese pro leagues are too big.
I love to see baseball back in the Summer Olympics. I would like to see them send the amateur or the NCAA players instead. The win would be more satisfying than win with the superstars players. Think about that 1980 Winter Olympics. We will not have a scenario like that anymore.

Hockey's World Jr's is arguably the finest best-on-best true to form tournament of that sport.

I don't remember when they switched to pro. Was it when US losing the basketball gold in the early 90s before they send the Dream Team, and then the pros for the other team sports?

The IOC reinstated it but the organizers in the 2024 Olympics chose not to have it. Too much for Paris to build baseball facilities that will be a burden after the games are over.

Yes, let Olympics be the promotion for young athletes like before. I don't remember when they switched to pro. Was it when US losing the basketball gold in the early 90s before they send the Dream Team, and then the pros for the other team sports? It was that, beginning with the US being robbed of the Gold in basketball in 1972. But it was also the fact that the Communist nations could send athletes that were pro in everything but name. Especially in ice hockey. Basketball was the first to allow pros to play, the Dream Team in 1992 after the US only won the bronze in 1988. Hockey took longer (1988) because the NHL had to shut down the season.
The US only failed to win the gold in basketball twice, 1972 and 1988. 1972 was the infamous final where the Soviets were given 26 tries to win the game at the buzzer. It was also a lousy team that the US sent. No Bill Walton, Bob McAdoo, David Thompson, Maurice Lucas, Jamaal Wilkes. Not sure why the US lost in 1988. Good team, David Robinson, Hersey Hawkins, Stacey Augmon, Mitch Richmond. The Soviets had a very strong team, mostly of Lithuanians. Those were the only two losses (well, 1980 also) but it wasn't like the Soviets were going to rule basketball like they ruled Hockey or Chess.
