Actually toss them, instead of giving them to a friend or selling them.
For years I've hung onto CDs so rigidly. Haven't played some in over a decade but "well, I might listen to it again some day." Lately I've been better at just giving up and tossing ones I'm no longer interested in.

Lately I've been better at just giving up and tossing ones I'm no longer interested in. I never throw out CDs. In fact, I still have all my LP records, even though I no longer have a functional turntable.

Never, even if I haven't touched them in years.
If I feel as though I don't want it in my possession anymore, I either sell it on eBay, or donate it to the local Goodwill. Seems like a waste to toss it in the trash if somebody else can use it.
Now, if it's completely worn to the point where it's no longer usable, then yeah, I'll dispose of the actual CD itself, but keep the cover art and jewel case.

Why throw them out? CDs are part of a collection. Ever hear the phrase "record collection"? That's how we view the music that we buy. It's a collection. Once bought, forever a part of our record collection.

I only throw out CDs that aren't playable, but since I take good care of my CDs that rarely happens. If your friends don't want the CDs you're no longer interested in you could donate them your local library. I'm sure there's someone out there who'd like them.

No, I've never got rid of any of my CDs or vinyl. Cassettes, I did sling when I moved house, because I was seriously running out of storage room, a bunch were knackered, and I had little room in my life for Wasp's "Inside the Electric Circus" anymore.

No but I have two garbage bags full of ones I may never play again in a closet. Really I don't play CDs at all anymore. Just about everything I like has been ripped to computer-land.

Never, I'd rather throw out the jewel CD case than throw out the actual CD itself.

Unless they are sale- or donate-able, yes. I'd feel better if they were recyclable, though.

I've done that on occasions when I felt it wasn't even worth trying to trade them in.

No, yet it's easy because I pretty much stopped buying them, other than my fav artists like Beck & Radiohead which I like to support + own hard copies. My fav cds are on a skinny/tall Ikea bookcase - not very important & yet it's a nice colourful array.

NEVER!
I got too many Store exclusives with extra tracks, too many Japan imports with extra tracks
Hell, I have Christina Aguilera's first album with the original "What a girl wants". Sony wants to act like that version never existed
In 2004, when my copy of Queen Latifah's 1993 album "Black Reign" was damaged in a move, it was extremely hard to find. Luckily i found it on amazon UK. SO i have 2 copies of that CD since i also found the japan import on ebay. I'm not getting rid of either copy. it's only now sold 'manufactured on demand' with cd-r through amazon
Some of my stuff, if i give them away or throw them out, i'll never get able to get That specific version back. Especially Aaliyah's music. her last 2 albums and her posthumous greatest hits are all out of print

I would never dream of throwing out any of my three thousand (plus) CDs. I wouldn't even sell any of them, even though some of them I don't really listen to. If anything, I want more.

I think I either traded or sold a couple of my CDs. However, I haven't thrown out any CDs that I have purchased.
Whenever I go to a used CD store or flea market, I see many CDs that I have that are in the 'bargain bin'. I got to thinking...how much would I get for MY copies of CDs? If anything, I'd probably have to pay the dealer to take them off my hands. Easier just to keep them.
I still have all my 45s and LPs. When I was young, I took organ lessons. I used to practice for 30 minutes a day each day. For that, my parents would give me a penny a minute. So, I would have $2.10. Each week (usually on the Saturday), I would go to the record store, and buy a 45. Back then, a 45 cost $1.99. With tax, the total would come to about $2.15. My folks would foot the bill for the extra nickel.
My cassettes, on the other hand, didn't survive. I had a 3 disc CD changer with dual cassette stereo. It was becoming more of a paperweight than anything. So, upon a heavy-duty fall cleaning, I pitched it. Most of my cassettes went with it, too.
For a few seconds, I was contemplating getting a turntable. I saw one that allows one to record MP3 files from LPs or 45s. I thought I would save a bit of money by converting all my 45s and LPs to MP3 files. You know....save me having to buy the file on iTunes. After I do that, what use is the turntable to me?
