Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film.
FIRST TIME FILM VIEWING
Night Must Fall (1937, Richard Thorpe) This mystery drama takes place mostly in one house and is well made but drags in places and I expected a little more from the finale. 6/10
Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre (2023, Guy Ritchie) This action comedy film is a disaster. Some of the laziest writing and direction I have seen from known quantities in a while. So badly out together that it’s hard to get through. 2.5/10
REPEAT FILM VIEWING
Magic (1978, Richard Attenborough) blu ray This drama horror about an anxious performer ( Anthony Hopkins) and his ventriloquist dummy has great talent behind and in front of the camera. The first half does run a tad slow and some of the reactions of characters don’t ring quite true but the second half works so well that all is forgiven. 7.5/10
FIRST TIME TV VIEWING
Inside Man (2022, Mini-series) Netflix This 4 episode series is a strange bird. It has two connected stories playing out, one in England and one in the USA. the American portion has great well written characters and the English section is lazing written and frustrating. Average TV
REPEAT TV VIEWING
MASH (1972, Season One) Disney+ One of the all time greats. A stellar first season, the only episode I didn’t like was the season finale. Great TV

Yours: Haven't seen any, was interested in seeing Guy Ritchie film but will definitely not be eager to after your review (been usually on same page as you over the years and since the original imdb boards, so 2.5 from u means ehhhhh hmmm) Mine: Films 1. Triangle of Sadness (Dir. Ruben Ostlund) via Hulu - Charlbi Dean, Vicki Berlim, Harris Dickinson, Woody Harrelson - 8/10 [First Viewing]
This was a film that started out great, had some dry spots, but ultimately had a great pay off. I found it odd at times, but odd is kinda my thing, but it had some very fantastic moments, and i enjoyed a lot of the themes and writing. 2. Third Person (Dir. Paul Haggis) via Hulu - Liam Neeson, Mila Kunis, Olivia Wilde, Adrien Brody, Kim Basinger, Maria Bello - 7/10 [First Viewing]
Not a huge fan of the ending, but had some very good chemistry between the cast and some great writing (ironic, as some of the characters are writers battling between good and bad writing). Not the best Haggis (im a huge fan), but still enjoyed it a lot. 3. One Night in Miami (Dir. Regina King) via Amazon Prime - Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge, Lance Reddick, Leslie Odom Jr. - 8/10 [Repeat Viewing]Despite it being fictionalized, i found this thoroughly entertaining, and perhaps im a bit biased as a history buff, but i liked the concept, and execution. Some underrated cinematography here too. I had to watch it again, because i had seen it with my ex-gf who talks a lot during films the previous time i seen it, so it was almost a first viewing lol. 4. Leila’s Brothers (Dir. Saeed Roustayee) via someone’s facebook video believe it or not lol) - w/ Taraneh Alidoosti, Navid Mohammadzadeh, Peyman Ma’adi, Saeed Poursamimi - 9/10 [First-Viewing]One of the best Iranian films I've seen as of late. This film was not allowed to be shown in Iran, despite produced domestically. Though it did well at Cannes and in the European circuit, hoping it finds a home on streaming. I would watch this again as Roustaee is my 2nd favorite Iranian director at the moment (behind Jafar Panahi). Hooman Behmanesh provides some of the best cinematography here, that I've seen in recent years, brilliantly showing poverty, classism, and Iranian culture, with boldness. 5. The Night (Dir. Kourosh Ahari) via Hulu - Shahab Hosseini, Niosha Noor - 6/10 [First-Viewing]
There were some good moments here and decent acting, overall the direction was far superior to the writing. And as i write this I try to be unbiased as I went to undergrad film studies at SJSU with the director, Koroush Ahari. Nonetheless he is a very capable young director, and look forward to his upcoming projects as he has some interesting ones in the works. 6. Just 6.5 aka Law of Tehran (Dir. Saeed Roustaee) - via Tubi Peyman Maadi, Navid Mohammadzadeh, Parinaz Izadyar, Farhad Aslani, Houman Kiai, Maziar Seyedi, Ali Bagheri, Marjan Ghamari - 10/10 [Second-Viewing]
Navid Mohammadzadeh shows why he is perhaps the best Iranian actor of the past 10 years. This is his tour-de-force performance, and it seemed to be even more enjoyable this second time around. Overall a great film depicting a cat and mouse game between a narcotics detective and a drug lord in Iran, and the drama that ensues. Cinematography from Hooman Behmanesh was amazing. 7. The Menu (Dir. Mark Mylod ) via HBO Max - Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, John Leguizamo - 7/10
Interesting, great acting, just a bit predictable and overall, it just felt too tv episode like, perhaps Mylod's work in Succession shows here, but it felt like one long episode. But nonetheless some great writing and acting, though the overall plot just seemed a bit much for me. No tv this week, but i need to get back on my Snowfall, Wu-Tang and Fleishmann hype, Cheers Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. Magic - 5/10
Mine:
M3GAN (2022) - 5/10 OK killer high tech robotic doll film. Ill just stick with Chucky.
Jackass Forever (2022) - 7/10 The Jackass guys pull off one last stunt/prank film and its damn funny.
Aquaslash (2019) - 5/10 Simple slasher at a water park film. Its watchable.
Getaway (2020) - 4/10 Girls get away to a cabin in the woods and chaos follows. Nothing great but still watchable.
Return to Sender (2015) - 3/10 Not too good rape/revenge drama. Still better than Loving the Bad Man though.
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013) - 3/10 Unfunny follow up to the 2004 film. I actually did not laugh once.
The Loneliest Boy in the World (2022) - 3/10 Forgettable horror comedy.

Cosmatos) - compromised production but fun and badass 6.5/10 Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997, Clint Eastwood) - on my watchlist Jumper (2008, Doug Liman) - 4.5 The Man from Snowy River (1982, George Miller) - been too long since I saw it but I liked it as a kid Death Wish (1974, Michael Winner) Death Wish II (1982, Michael Winner) Death Wish 3 (1985, Michael Winner) Death Wish 4: The Crackdown (1987, J. Lee Thompson) Death Wish V: The Face of Death (1994, Allan A. Goldstein) - you saw my thoughts on these over the last 5 weeks Blade Runner (1982, Ridley Scott) - 9.5/10 Watchmen (2009, Zack Snyder) - 8/10 for the directors of ultimate cut, theatrical cut is lower as it feels butchered. Which version did you watch? Amores Perros (2000, Alejandro G. Iñárritu) - switched it off because of the dog fighting scenes I read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and Watchmen this week and then watched the theatrical versions of Blade Runner and Watchmen. I had only ever seen the final cut of Blade Runner and the director's cut of Watchmen. I just put my scores for the final cut and directors cut though haha

Yours
Night Must Fall (1937). The 1964 remake with Albert Finney is to be avoided at all cost. Roz Russell and Dame May Witty are marvelous. A true classic.
Magic (1978). This is magical. A Must See.
Mine
Bomber’s Moon / Charles Fuhr (pseudonym for Edward Ludwig, Harold D. Schuster, and John Brahm) (1943). Filmed entirely on the 20th Century Fox lot, this World War II adventure just screams B-movie, yet is somehow oddly entertaining. Perhaps that is because it is a nostalgic romp through a survey of wartime movie tropes: The Bomber raid, the escape from a castle turned Nazi prison, avoiding the searchlights and soldiers, secret passages across water by fishing boat, and much, much more.
Escape From Alcatraz / Don Siegel (1979). It is night. Frank Morris (Clint Eastwood), shackled, is being led onto a boat. He is transported to Alcatraz island where he is processed into the prison (a doctor with a tongue depressor saying “Open up” are the only words spoken during this 8-minute opening scene in darkness that ends when cell bars are clanged in Morris’ face and a guard says, “Welcome to Alcatraz.”) It is another 7-minutes before Eastwood speaks. After this bravura start, the movie has a lot to live up to but doesn’t quite make it. Also excellent is Patrick McGoohan as the warden and an early prominent role for Fred Ward as one of the three men that Frank Morris draws into his escape scheme. “Escape From Alcatraz” was the fifth and last collaboration of Don Siegel with Clint Eastwood and the third from last film that Siegel directed.
John Wick: Chapter 2 / Chad Stahelski (2017). Rewatch leading up to Chapter 4. Again we find the retired master assassin for Russian mobsters (he’s not the Boogeyman, he’s who you send to kill the Boogeyman) being pulled back into the Life. Again we are in a fantasy underworld criminal society of violent people but who must obey certain rules and formalities. Ambitious crime family leader Santino D'Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio) has just such a Marker from John Wick. He demands that Wick assassinate his (Santino’s) sister (Claudia Gerini, excellent in her scene with Wick) who has a seat at The High Table, the underworld rule-makers, which Santino wants. Against his will, Wick must carry out the task
Once Upon A Time In…Hollywood / Quentin Tarantino (2019). I really didn’t want to see any more Tarantino, but caved on advice from friends on the Classic Film Board, and discovered that this is a wonderful film. Funny. Satiric (but not parody), and superbly acted. Set in 1969 Los Angeles, Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), star of an earlier ‘60s western TV series, has a career in serious decline. He and his best friend and stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt, Academy Award winner for the role), are working on finding a breakthrough. Among the stars and deal makers in Hollywood that they meet are: Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), husband Roman Polanski (Rafal Zawierucha), who live next door to Dalton, and members of the Manson family cult like Squeaky Fromme (Dakota Fanning). Tarantino indulges in some of his history bending carried over from “Inglourious Basterds.” Highly recommended.
Star Trek: The Original Series “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” Season 1, Episode 7 (October 20, 1966) “Miri” Season 1, Episode 8 (October 27, 1966) Guests: Kim Darby, Michael J. Pollard, John Megna “Dagger Of The Mind” Season 1, Episode 9 (November 3, 1966) Guests: James Gregory, Marrianna Hill. The first Vulcan Mind Meld.
Star Trek: The Next Generation “The Best of Both Worlds Part II” Season 4, Episode 1 (September 22, 1990) “Family” Season 4, Episode 2 (September 29, 1990) “Brothers” Season 4, Episode 3 (October 6, 1990) “Suddenly Human” Season 4, Episode 4 (October 13, 1990)
Star Trek: Enterprise – this is the 5th spin-off Star Trek series after The Animated Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, and Voyager. It ran for 4 seasons. It is a prequel set 100 years before the events of The Original Series. “Broken Bow, Part 1” Season 1, Episode 1 (September 26, 2001) “Broken Bow, Part 2” Season 1, Episode 2 (September 26, 2001) “Fight Or Flight” Season 1, Episode 3 (October 3, 2001) “Strange New World” Season 1, Episode 4 (October 10, 2001)
