DR. BLOOD'S COFFIN 1961- . Hazel Court has a good lead role. Kieron Moore is an interesting mad scientist--he is sincerely driven to murder without appearing crazy or too sinister. I suppose it must have been a novelty at the time for the leading man to be the bad guy like this. It is credited as being one of the first color films to show a zombie. I think the story falters a little towards the end but thanks to Court's reaction to the situation, she doesn't go into typical shrieking damsel mode. Her reaction is intellectual and restrained. Curare sure is a nasty substance.

I know I had an old review of this one on the (deceased) action board (R.I.P). Looks like I enjoyed it a little more than you did. Over-the-top and ridiculous sprite cat-and-mouse thriller. Hamill really chews it up, while at the other end of the spectrum Robert Mitchum looks like he rather be elsewhere. The concept is creative, but I do not find it to pan out as so. Still some of those set-pieces give it an edge. To my humble "defense" , I had already been through Johnny English Strikes Again (2018) which was kind of a downer, Secret Admirer (1985) a really good one, and well, I almost fell a sleep a few times during Midnight Ride, not because I was bored, but I was getting to a place where I had a hard time staying awake, so I might have missed out on a few scenes, here and there. But I kind of liked the atmosphere and style. A nice, moody late midnight thriller, a bit too late for myself, but who knows, I might re-watch it later on and things might go upwards. Still, I am glad I caught the last few scenes, that was really quite the show, and when you thought Hammill were written out for good, well, think again. Seeing how the Animated board is back, well, I guess the chances for having the action and adventure board up and going again, is not most likely gonna happen. But would have loved seeing it, mixed in with the martial arts section. I have to take your word on it Never been tempted by Johnnie English. Maybe it was all that night time driving on the screen which lulled you to sleep. Where I think it faulted was mainly centred around the Michael Dudikoff sub-plot. It could’ve been much more. Like a threat. Since he was an abusive husband/or boyfriend who just happens to be a cop. On the road after his wife/or girlfriend. He puts her in the situation she finds herself in when she tries to flee him. Could have made for some intense moments. But the story boringly turns him into the hero. A shady one at that. It would be cool to see the action board resurrected, but I think the foot traffic was way less frequent than the animation board. When you took that time off a couple years back... the board slowly died and never picked up again. I posted every now and again on the ‘What was the last action film you watched’ thread. But it was rather barren. So the board disappearing didn’t surprise me. I would’ve been way more disappointed if the horror board disappeared... but it looks safe for the time being.

I kind of wanted to like the Johnny English films but they felt like a cheap/hasty mix up of, Mr. Bean, Frank Drebin, Austin Powers and Inspector Clousou, but as with the Bean movies with Rowan Atkinson, he is more funny and likeable during the short films back in the 80s and 90s, but 90-100 minutes of watching him, in "hysterical" slapstick routine situations, several I have seen lots of times, in other and far better comedies, well, it can get a bit too "funny", but Olga Kurylenko and the whole Virtual Reality scene from Strikes Back, saves the film up to a average rating, but even then, I am kind of amazed they have made three films of Atkinson as Johnny English, and I guess there will probably be another one, coming up in a few years as well. A warm blanket, a dark living room, and very late at night, will often make it kind of hard to stay awake, specially when the film you are watching, also has a night time feel to it, which Midnight Ride surely delivers. Yeah, the action board getting resurrected is probably not very likely, but looking at the film general board, I do notice a lot of action movie lovers, but I think very few of the "old timers" ever stepped out of the film general secetion and visited/posted in the other boards/sections, and whenever I stumbled upon an interesting or cool discussion/topic of action related films in the film general, it usually died away, very soon, and went into permanent "hiding", several pages back, within a few hours or a day. I am glad the horror board is still here, as if that had disppeared, my motivation for continue on posting, would surely fade away.

Portrait of a Serial Killer (1998) by Steve Jodrell Also known as Afraid of the Dark, an australian made for tv movie, and a very well made/acted one, I must say. I guess these days, it is probably most known for starring a young and lesser known Hugh Jackman. Anyway, the film deals with a tragic outcome, when a ruthless mass murderer visits a little petrol station/diner, and kills in cold blood, several people, but where a mechanic with survivor guilt, ends up as the main witness, and I thought the actor who plays the mechanic along with the female psychiatrist who helps the cops in the investigation, were the ones who kept the plot interesting and engaging, with their solid acting performances. Sure, midway through, some rather silly "romantic" stuff happens, followed by a sex scene, I guess to spice things up, between the female lead and Jackman. I wished they had just skipped that one, and went furter in with the investigation, but all in all, for a tv movie, this was actually a really good one.

Avenging Angel (1985) by Robert Vincent O'Neil Molly aka Angel, is back after 4 years, and where she has drastically changed her former workplace, the seedy and sleazy streets of Hollywood Boulevard into a very different kind of work, as she is practicing to become a lawyer. However, with the recent murder of one of her closest friends, she decides to return back to her old neighbourhood, visiting a few old timers and make sure that whoever is responsibable will pay, big time. Well, I guess the second time around, was not really necessary, but of course, the money was probably too tempting and they wanted to try and turn the first film into a similar revenge/crime thriller franchise as the Death Wish films, which at times Avenging Angel kind of felt like, at least more towards the last Death Wish adventures, that is. Sure, we have several of the familiar and charming faces and figures from the first film, returning. Even in bigger and more explosive parts, but the plot and villains are not really all that impressive, and the biggest problems, is that the film never seems to decide what it wants to be. An crime court drama, a revenge thriller, an action film or even a feel-good comedy at times. The sleaze and cheese are still all there, but the more hard and edgy style, combined with the charm of the first film, is more or less gone, expect maybe for a few sweet moments, here and there. The action scenes and villains are straight out of one of the later Death Wish sequels, and I kept wondering when Paul Kersey would arrive. Betsy Russell looks great, as always, but she cannot save the film by herself or with a little help from her friends. I also took notice, that during the more explosive moments, the music sounded very much alike some of the stuff that James Horner did for action films such as 48 Hrs., Gorky Park, Commando and Red Heat, with the caribbean steeldrums and so on. Probably a bit of a trend back then, within the action films to feature that kind of score/sounds. Anyway, lots of familiar faces and names show up here, the great character actor, who often tend to get the bad guy parts, Frank Doubleday and Tim Rossovich (in this one, he went by the name of Timothy) stars with his moustache henchman image, but nice to see a smaller yet friendlier part with the often seen 70s favorite heavy, Robert Tessier as well. And was that (the mean nurse) Jerry Seinfeld's mum? All in all, I might check out the third and "final" chapter, but the second one was not much of a "great" sequel, but it seems like I had it lying around in my watchlist, might have mistaken it with the first one, or that it featured Betsy Russell, and it was kind of enough to put it into that list, but I am glad I did not cash out money on that one. 4/10

Honestly, I liked it even less than this one.

A wildlife research team discovers a yeti creature on the warpath in the Canadian wilderness. A semi-remake of the 1977 made-for-TV classic, but nowhere near as good. It's just lacking that certain something that made the original so much better. However, unlike the original, we do get to see full scenes of the monster. The downside of that is the makeup effects aren't very impressive. It's an obvious rubber mask and I'm pretty sure I saw a zipper at the back of the costume. The movie also suffers from weak writing and routine direction.

Demons 2 (1986) by Lamberto Bava I should probably have re-visited the first one, and then moved onto the second afterwards. But, after the Guess which movie challenge a few days ago, I kind of wanted to re-visit the sequel, just to make sure if I had missed out one something. Sadly, for the third or fourth time, that I have seen it, it just never reaches above a mediocre rating, as it feels like somewhere in the mess, it might or could have turned into a much more fun and "better" movie, but too many annoying side characters/stories, and the ones who actually come across as either interesting or likeable, ends up getting the bad treatment of being written out, too early or just be in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Instead, the film decides to pay far too much attention towards some bratty teen girl and her birthday party, a bunch of douchebags, riding a fast car in the streets (yeah, I remember something similar from the original, but I think that one actually had somekind of reason to be included, not just a time waster) then you have the annoying pregnant woman and her geeky boyfriend, the even more hysterical and annoying hooker in the elevator, and if not for Bobby Rhodes in the role hilarious role of another screaming and shouting man of action, as Hank the gym instructor, and where his commanding precence as just another born natural leader, in the mist of total chaos, is sadly given too little time in this one. I kind of liked the idea of a tall building and lots of potential for atmosphere and cool scenes, but it was too much "all over the place" at times, dragging down the pace and it just never came close of capturing the same fast paced style and adventure of the first film. Still, there are some cool special effect and gory scenes, Bobby Rhodes is back in action, cheese (the obvious Gremlins and Videodrome references) and some nice choice of musical songs included, but again, one of those films that no matter how much I try, I just cannot seem to enjoy it more. 5/10

I think both of the Demons films, were filmed or set in some German city, Frankfurt or Stuttgart? They even included a few random scenes from some sausage party in the streets, not to ignore one of the party goes, who was "thrown" out, to stand guard and wait for the douchy teenagers in the rapid moving car, and it felt like those scenes dragged on, way too long, and again, it hurt the pace of the movie.
The best scenes, I thought where the siege/war down in the parking lot basement, with the demons going up agains the work-a-holics and the other tenants in the building, all led by Hank the gym instructor. Sadly for Hank, he got his balls in a tight squeeze, but still managed to kill of a few of the enemies. I wonder which of the supposedly "third" Demons film are actually worth seeking out, as I remember one also went under titles of Demons or Demoni 3, but also The Ogre and a couple of other Italian named alternative titles as well.
I guess it was kind of the same with the many Zombie releases, Zombie 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on. A lot of confusion, made maybe even worse by some of those films being great, really classic zombie films, others, not so well.

There's Black Demons, an Umberto Lenzi cheapie about voodoo that has nothing to do with the first two: There's the aforementioned Demons III: The Ogre, which also has nothing to do with the first two: Then there's The Church, which actually had involvement by Argento again, and is sorta kinda seen as the official unofficial Demons 3:

Looking at these trailers, I actually believe I have seen both The Church and Black Demons, but The Ogre is one that I have never met up with before. The Church, I think Asia Argento once again played a part, maybe a bit bigger as well than her role in Demons 2. I might have to try and re-watch it, as it looks like the better of the trio.
Anyway, thanks for bringing up the trailers.

Mutant (1984) by John "Bud" Cardoz Two brothers from the big city, is taking a roadtrip towards the country, but gets no "warm" greetings, instead they are soon driven off the road by a bunch of wild rednecks, and which then forces the brothers to walk for the rest of the way, into the nearest town. One which just happens to be even less "friendlier", and where dead bodies suddenly starts to show up, only to then disappear the next minute. I am not sure how I got to this one last night, I believe I was in search for another Wings Houser film, but thought Mutant or Night Shadows looked like it got some potential for a fun sci-fi/horror movie, and I gotta say, the first 25-30 minutes seemed very promising at times. I thought Wings Houser delivered once again, a great (at least set in a b-movie) performance, and helped out by regular character actors such as Bo Hopkins as the local Sheriff and Jennifer Warren as the town doctor. Still, I think the film would have suited better, if it were mostly filmed during the night, as I loved the atmosphere for the first half hour, but the daylight scenes, along with those ridiculous mutant creatures, who looked like they had not seen the sun, for a lifetime, kind of ruined a bit of the setting, but still, not bad for a b-movie. Also, I did notice that some of the screaming/monster sound effects, were very similar to those from the first Phantasm movie, which makes me wonder if there is such a thing within the horror films, as the Wilhelm or Howie scream effect? Sadly, those sounds from the mutants, were far more terrifying than the clownish and goofy mutants themselves, and here in this small town paranoia situation, less is more, would in my opionion, been far more useful. Anyway, I guess I cannot complain too much, Wings Houser delivers once again a solid part, but it felt like the film had so much more going on at times, then just ended up throwing that away for the usual sci-fi stuff during the last scene. 6/10 Horror High (1973) by Larry N. Stouffer Another impulse watch, thanks to the enormous free movie archive that is on Youtube, and this one was probably the best or most enjoyable film from last night. The story of a young man who is bullied and blackmailed by everything from his fellow class "mates" to teachers, is probably not groundbreaking stuff, but I thought for such a (most likely) low budget release (loved the crackling sounds and the grainy drive-in picture) it was well handed and acted out. I could see the similarities towards later high school horror films where an outsider is driven into madness, as Carrie (1976), Christine (1983) and maybe also Trick or Treat (1986) at least shares a few of the same style and setting, that and The Nutty Professor. 6,5/10
