Last Night in SohoWent to the theater for this one. Pretty fun, solid little ghost story/mystery. After a certain point, it starts to rely a little too heavily on CGI jump scares, but the early dream sequences are incredibly eerie and effective. The mystery is also intriguing, although without giving anything away, I think it cheats a little bit at the end.

Still of the Night (1982; Robert Benton) – I can't believe Meryl Streep called this her only bad movie, but perhaps she just dislikes genre films in general. It's a neat little Hitchcock hommage about a psychiatrist (Roy Scheider) who gets involved with a woman (Streep) who may be a murderer. Scheider is such a reliable actor, I don't think I ever disliked him in anything and he convinces even in this for him unusual role. Streep is very good as a neurotic woman, although she is obviously far removed from the typical Hitchock blonde, even though director Benton reportedly wanted her to be like Grace Kelly for this. I was a bit underwhelmed by this when I first saw it. But now on a rewatch my expectations weren't as high and I thought for the most part it worked really well. It's elegantly directed by Benton who creates some effective suspense sequences. I believe it's main flaw is, that the script would've needed a bit more work, since the last act takes some weird leaps in logic and feels a bit rushed. I still prefer this to the other Hitchcock homage Roy Scheider did with Jonathan Demme two years previously, Last Embrace. 7/10

Gone by Dawn(2016). Rape-revenge at a strip club. Some violence, some nudity, some surprises. 5/10.

Forgot to mention here that on Friday I saw Lake Placid, 1999, dir. Steve Miner. Great goofy fun. I remember theravenking praised its dialogue, and I agree, so many memorable lines: “What, are we all museum-bigots in Maine?,” “I’m a civilian, not a trout,” “Going back in history, crocodiles have been more worshipped than Jesus,” “Is that a crime? To wish the chewing of law enforcement?,” “You can’t take a cow by eminent domain!” None of those lines is remotely realistic, but they’re examples of the over-the-top, witty dialogue—which used to fill plays, musicals, and movies—that I adore. Whatever happened to wit? As you can probably tell from those lines, the movie doesn’t take itself seriously—or, I should say, it is a genre picture that simultaneously spoofs the genre it’s in. The ’90s were full of that kind of thing, for whatever reason: The Edge, Congo, Scream… While we’re trying to bring back wit, can we also bring back the half-serious, half-parodic genre movie? Also, I need to mention that Bridget Fonda is extremely attractive in this. Definitely recommended.

The Void(2016) A deputy, who reminded me of a young Nic Cage, is trapped in a soon to be abandoned hospital with it's skeleton crew, a wounded druggie, 2 guys who want to kill the druggie, a mad doctor, and various monsters by a group of silent people in sheets with knives. Quite a weird movie. 6/10.

Although I didn't hate it, ending a series wishing I had never even started isn't a great feeling. Still have a fondness for the first film, but this was dire. And terribly, terribly unfunny. Good puppet/prosthetic work though, and the heel turn from the sheriff's daughter into a dominatrix got a chuckle out of me. 4/10

Crash(Okay, sure, it's a bit of a stretch to classify this one as horror/thriller, but if you weren't at least a little creeped out by this, you may be kinda sick. And I suspect David Cronenberg is...) The kind of movie that's almost impossible to pitch, it's impressive that it even got made at all. I can't envision any producer or executive wanting to put money up for something like this, but I'm glad somebody did. It's a goddamned masterpiece. In concept, maybe one of the most perverse movies ever made. It's object fetishism, sadomasochism, necrophilia, suicide. It's Holly Hunter vigorously masturbating in a wrecked car a few feet away from her husband's corpse. It's Elias Koteas fingering surgical stitches. It's James Dean's death recreated for an applauding audience. It's Rosanna Arquette vacuuum-sealed into a combination body brace/S&M harness. It's James Spader f*cking scar tissue. It's a wild, squirm-inducing ride, and if you've never checked it out I can promise you you've never seen anything like it. It's a way more interesting movie than that Crash that won Best Picture, that's for sure...
