It did seem like a retread of so many other movies, but there was a real twist that you missed out on. Also, the gore was unexpectedly great. *chef's kiss* π¨βπ³ π

We are Wolves(1924) Not a horror or Werewolf movie. More a thriller, A young woman leaves her BF to move back in with her sadomasochistic GFs. The GFs force her to play a number of kinky games to get back in their good graces. Surprisingly well acted and well done for a low budget movie. Nudity, one non graphic lesbian sex scene, most of the sadism is of a psychological control type, but there are a couple of somewhat brutal scenes. Not for everyone, but I liked it. 7/10.

MADHOUSE 1974- Vincent Price's last starring role I think is actually a pretty good send off (for the most part--it is kind of crude and chaotic, curious what the source novel Devil Day is like). I prefer it to Theater of Blood -even though it is a less classy affair, it is more logical swan song for him. He literally sings at the end of it!

The Parallax View (1974)An idealistic senator is assassinated in the Seattle Space Needle during a campaign event. Three years later, an intrepid reporter begins his own investigation when he discovers witnesses to the assassination are dying under mysterious circumstances. Imagine a world that has this secret organization specializing in assassination, and will also stop at absolutely nothing in covering up what they believe are loose ends. This includes murdering innocent people they suspect might know something, making the deaths look like accidents. It's a cold-hearted, evil, dehumanizing concept that is frightening and remarkably played out here. Director Alan J. Pakula beautifully captures this sense of dread, and the result is dark, moody, and mysterious. The dark anamorphic cinematography by Gordon blends in well with this feeling, and also helps give plenty of space for those scenes shot at great distances; this really sets the tone of paranoia and alienation. Pakula presents this vision of American society in which average, everyday people are unaware of what they perceive to be as normalcy is actually something else entirely. The idea is that underneath the facade of cheery, flag-waving patriotism and rooting for idealistic political candidates hoping to bring major change, there lurks unknown dark forces who have the power to keep things status quo. Not everything is spelled out clearly in The Parallax View, as there is some ambiguity. But the idea is to really make you think and draw your own conclusions on certain elements that are open to interpretation. Out of all those 1970s paranoia thrillers, this one is probably the most frightening. 7.5/10

FLARE UP 1969 - Terrible movie about a go-go dancer (Raquel Welch) being stalked (thanks to her go-go personality) by a murderer with Jim Carrey's Lloyd Christmas haircut (Luke Askew). Unlikable characters--including the dancer's boyfriend who has a room with Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, and Zapata posters, and enjoys taking photographs of bullfights off the tv. At least I finally learned what go-go dancing is. The title refers to what she does to get the killer off her back with some help from gasoline and matches.

Caddy Hack (2023) I tried watching this but I gave up after about 15 minutes. The overuse of those Hanna-Barbera cartoon sound effects was so annoying.

The Curious Case of the Campus Corpse - 1977 - Indie film about a blue collar kid Craig (Jeff East) who gets a sports scholarship to attend an Ivy League type of school and is invited to join a fraternity. His construction worker older brother warns him about it since he had an altercation with it when he was involved in a protest march. Nevertheless, Craig hesitantly goes along with the hazing initiation since he befriends a student named Barney (Charles Martin Smith) who is also looking to join. But something goes wrong with the initiation and the latter is killed after a fall from a cliff--so the fraternity leadership covers it up--threatening Craig with a murder rap if he doesn't play along with the plan to store the body for a week until they can dump it on a ski slope as an accident.
The acting is first-rate--it was due to this film that East was cast in Superman and it is a good rehearsal. There's a surprise twist towards the end and then another turn which is interesting for the fact that it goes against the usual tropes about rural living vs the city and academia.
Some people seem to hate the film for the twists (it seems to be a thriller and then takes a completely different turn) but I think it was so bizarre and unexpected that it worked for me.

Blue Sunshine (1978)Radical college students from the late 60s who experimented with a deadly strain of LSD suddenly become homicidal maniacs ten years later. A neat idea is done in a surprisingly bland presentation. Just has a very ordinary feel to it. What's more is the ending doesn't really have a solid resolution. However, the good part is watching the killers suddenly becoming bald with a light blue skin tone; these scenes are pretty freaky, and the murder attacks are done with great intensity. Nice try from cult director Jeff Lieberman, but no cigar. 6/10

Teenage Monster(1957) Low budget horror-monster movie. A young boy is exposed to a fallen meteor and grows up to become the titled "Teenage Monster"(played by a 50 year old actor). Not as bad as I thought it might be, but still left a lot to be desired. Veteran actress Anne Gwynne as the monster's protective mother gives a good effort to play it straight. 3Β½/10.

Blood Sabbath(1972) A coven of witches wants the soul of a wandering Vietnam vet. With Dyanne Thorne in this I thought it would at least have softcore sleeze production quality, I thought wrong. The sets, dialogue, and acting are all pretty poor. I was considering giving this a 2/10, then I went to IMDB and saw I had already given it a 4/10. Guess I was influenced by the ample nudity. I'll compromise and give it a generous 3/10.

Well made, suspenseful and really brutal film. The ending is seems to be debated but pretty well disliked. Personally Im OK with the ending but I fully understand those who are not.
