THE LOVE BUTCHER - 1975 - Similar to Alice, Sweet Alice, it feels more like a quirky character study drama than a straight horror film. The main character is a man with split personality--one is that of a hunchback gardener with bifocals (dressed like Stephen King in Creepshow) who has a dual identity as a Don Juan type. At times it seems more like a comedy (not helped by the soundtrack which has a 1940s sound). Cast of unknowns (to me), some interesting photography but not surprised it is an obscurity.

This is one I'd like to see out of curiosity. Sounds like a precursor to horror movies like Maniac and Don't Go In The House. I know that it has Robin Sherwood, who played Charles Bronson's daughter in Death Wish II.

I just picked up a DVD of this, shame to hear that it's mediocre. You never know, you may end up liking it better than I did. I watched it, and sadly have to agree with you. By today's standards it's just a rather dull film. It may hold some historical interest, but not much more.

I know that it has Robin Sherwood, who played Charles Bronson's daughter in Death Wish II. Oh I wondered about who that was--yeah she has the scene where she is attacked underwater in the nude. She said she didn't expect the nudity and was mad about it--but the movie didn't get distributed until 1982.

Maniac(1980) A serial killer is on the loose in NYC taking his female victims' scalps to adorn his mannequin collection. The 1st half of the movie is him stalking and killing his victims interspersed with him talking to himself and his mannequins, letting you know just how crazy he is. It gets a little more interesting when he begins to develop a sort of relationship with Caroline Munro while stalking her. The killing methods are varied and bloody and miss Munro is a plus(though I couldn't understand why she was drawn to our killer). 5/10.

The Dunwich Horror (1970) Dean Stockwell is an occultist who needs a virgin to sacrifice in a ceremony to bring back a race of "the Old Ones" from another dimension. He meets malleable Sandra Dee who quickly falls under his control and remains so for most of the movie. Ed Begley is a college professor trying to stop Stockwell's evil plan. Based on a Lovecraft story which I recently read, so I understood better what was going on and raise my rating a point, but still not enough to like it. 4/10.

In the brief glimpse of the monster in The Dunwich Horror--if you look closely--you can see Stockwell's face visible in it. It has very tv-movie quality set lighting. Some movies of the period have this look that is rather artificial. I don't mind it actually but it stands out--right before they started to use more natural lighting and moving camera set ups.
Stockwell had fancy hand moves with the knife.

5ive Girls(2006) 5 troubled girls are the sole inmates of a religious reform school. The school is haunted by a demon and the girls realize they better join together to battle this thing if they are to survive their stay. A bit farfetched as the school seemed to be totally staffed by a shaky priest/teacher(Ron Perlman) and a strict Headmistress. There was another priest who made a couple of appearances, but I'm not sure if he even had a job there, so I don't know who handled the cooking, deliveries, maintenance, nursing, etc. Still it was watchable and the 5 young actresses playing the inmates were believable. 5/10.

THE HEAD - 1959 - Horst Frank kills and transplants heads for scientific and lurid purposes. He gives a woman with a deformed body that of a dancer and complications ensue.
FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL - 1974 - Gets better with each viewing--pretty decent conclusion for the Cushing series--with some gruesome humor added but never to the point of sabotaging the pathos side of things. Even though it is entirely set-bound, the interior of the asylum is very picturesque when viewed in HD.

Scream of the Demon Lover(1970) Young woman travels to a medieval castle to work for a charming, womanizing Baron, whose GFs keep winding up murdered. Some spooky imagery in the castle and some attractive, and occasionally naked, would be victims. 6/10.

Abigail (2024)Criminals kidnap the ballerina daughter of a business tycoon, unaware of what they've gotten themselves into. An exceptionally well crafted horror crime-caper. If Quentin Tarantino wrote Reservoir Dogs to be about the kidnapping of a vampire girl instead of a diamond heist, this is how it likely would have turned out. Lots of snappy dialogue with a quirky sense of humor. Plenty of wonderfully gruesome surprises along the way. Great performances by the entire cast, and young Alisha Weir does a particularly amazing job conveying a sense of sweet innocence and then flipping it over to pure nastiness. It does get bogged down with an overdone showdown towards the end, the kind that's been done a million times before with way too many climaxes. Aside from that, Abigail is solid and in my opinion one of the best horror movies of 2024 so far. 7.5/10

HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD 1976 - Low budget film comedy thriller starring Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov, about the low budget film business with cameos from Boris Karloff, a Godzilla clone, and Robby the Robot.

The Doll of Satan(1969) A young woman and her fiancee travel to a castle she has inherited from her late uncle. The castle comes with a ghost legend, a torture chamber, and a mysterious killer. Don't know what relevance the title has to the movie, unless I missed something. In Italian with English subs. 5/10.

The First Omen (2024)An American novitiate is sent to work at a Catholic orphanage in Rome. With help of Father Brennan, she fights a sinister conspiracy to bring about the birth of the Antichrist. Hugely disappointing prequel to the 1976 classic. I found it slow-moving and dull. It completely distorts many elements of the original Omen legend. The mother is not a jackal. Father Brennan is not one of the conspirators like he was in the original (before he decided to redeem himself). The reasoning for bringing the Antichrist into the world was just plain stupid. And the filmmakers didn't explore the theme of satanism as well as they should have. I don't know if they are going to continue on with this reboot, but I would like to think this will actually be The Last Omen. 4/10

Auntie Lee's Meat Pies (1992) Auntie Lee has a successful meat pie business thanks to her "special ingredient" which her 4 sexy nieces manage to seduce into her recipe. Amusing horror-comedy with an interesting cast led by Karen Black(Auntie Lee), Pat Morita, and Michael Berryman. Pat Paulsen and Huntz Hall have cameos and porn actress Teri Weigel is one of the nieces. 6/10.
