Also the main rapist wears a hockey mask and overalls-it's not the Jason one--but close. Some have wondered if it influenced Friday the 13th but I would think The Road Warrior was more likely to have inspired the hockey mask idea. The serial rapist in ‘Rape Squad’ is a very unnerving character. Other than his appearance (mask and orange jump suit), it’s the way he toys around with the victims. The film does tend to lean into exploitation, but I think it’s rather effective. I do like the climatic set-up in the zoo after hours.

The only thing about the zoo scene--why didn't they have guns? They had them with the phone pervert. One of those situations where they have to make them do dumb things to get the plot where they want it to go.

The Gathering (2003) Christina Ricci is Cassie, an Amnesiac living in an English village with a family that befriended her after hitting her with their car. She notices strange people who are always staring at her and begins having visions of bad things happening. A bit confusing and slow moving until Cassie finally begins to figure out what's going on and it finishes well. 5½/10.

Even though the rape scenes weren’t graphic, I thought they had an intensity to them and sorta lingered. True, the hot tub scene felt like it was chucked in get the exploitive tick. Not carrying a gun for the climatic standoff probably didn’t make much sense, especially if things didn’t entirely go to plan (which it doesn’t) , but I could see it as an overconfidence and safety in numbers mindset. Along with their self-defence training thinking they had it over their attacker. They wanted to toy around, like he did to them. Though the ladies weren’t all on the same wave length, and paid the ultimate price. But yeah, hard to grasp at least one of them not having a gun. So true, anything to get the plot moving and to where they want it to go. No gun, means more thrills.

, but I could see it as an overconfidence and safety in numbers mindset. Along with their self-defence training thinking they had it over their attacker. Yeah that would make sense. They mentioned being concerned their karate friend had a tournament but since they had beat up a pimp etc they probably felt they could handle Jingle Bells. That is what made him really sick--the humiliation. There's no titillation in the rape scenes--they didn't get explicit--just enough to convey it without overdoing it. One thing I wondered about--there was a poor man's Alain Delon introduced at the police station--seen the guy before--I thought for a second he was either meant to be a red herring for the rapist--he had the same general appearance as Jingle Bells--or he was going to be more involved.
I wonder if the film had some deleted scenes.

Cocaine Werewolf (2024)A cocaine-addicted stockbroker is bitten by a werewolf and becomes one himself, then goes on a killing spree. It's only when he snorts the nose candy that he turns into the monster. I've been tricked again, thinking this would be a somewhat enjoyable bad movie, but it was just too poor to enjoy. It's billed as a comedy horror, but was it funny? Nope, I didn't laugh once, not even so much as a chuckle. Is it good horror? Not in the least, with all the bad makeup and gore effects. Terrible acting, to boot. I don't mind a no-budget movie, but when it shows that it's so cheap then that's a turn-off. But then again, maybe it was done that way as part of the "charm". The only thing I did find amusing were some of the in-joke references to low budget horror filmmaking. Otherwise, a total bore. It's the kind of movie where you play on your phone while you watch it. 2/10

JACKSON COUNTY JAIL - 1976 - Yvette Mimieux is an advertising executive who gets tired of the male chauvinism she encounters in Los Angeles and takes a cross country drive home to New York--but her car is taken by some teens at gunpoint and she is menaced by a yokel taxidermist and then put in jail next to career criminal Tommy Lee Jones. When she is raped by a yokel deputy and kills him, he breaks out, taking her along. A weird mix of comedy and southerner stereotypes grounded by Mimieux's harrowing performance as someone who is gradually ostracized from civilization. The ending is kind of inconclusive (the classic ambiguous freezeframe shot).

Red State(2011) A psycho pastor/cult leader is kidnapping and murdering those he feels are sexually immoral. John Goodman is an ATF agent leading the investigation. More action/thriller than horror. Michael Parks is believable as the cult leader. The title isn't mentioned during the movie, but I suspect it's a political statement about gun control in Republican States. Written and directed by Kevin Smith. 6/10.

Blood Suckers (1971) A nice cast and the likelihood of some Vampires had my hopes up. Peter Cushing has only a supporting role, but Patrick Macnee has a major role as a British official helping 3 young Brits find a friend who has gone missing in Greece. The friend has fallen under the influence of the beautiful Imogen Hassal, who may be a Vampire(who can walk in the sun) or a human with hypnotic powers who likes to drink blood. There is an over long orgy scene. I have no objection to sex and nudity, but that scene got tedious. overall not terrible, but could have(should have) been better. 5/10.

The Communion Girl (2022)Young folks are terrorized by the malevolent spirit of a little girl wearing a First Communion dress. This Spanish horror movie seemed to be on to something with a good idea, but the flimsy script and predicable jump scares keep it from rising above mediocrity. What we're left with is a "creepy little ghost girl, looking like a rotted corpse, sneaking up on everybody." Translation; just another Ring wannabe. Some good atmosphere and well acted, but nothing more. I might have given this a slightly higher rating if it wasn't for the lousy, seemingly incomplete ending! 5/10

Becky(2020) and Wrath of Becky(2023) Similar plots have teenager Becky(Lulu Wilson) squaring off against gangs of criminal psychos who each give her cause to justify her rage. Both can be fun watches if you don't take them too seriously. Becky #1 has a better plot setup and is slightly less unbelievable. Becky 6/10, Wrath of Becky 5½/10. At the end of Wrath they seem to be setting up a 3rd installment, Which I would probably watch.

Clock (2023)After friends and family pressure her into having a baby, 37-year-old yuppie Ella makes the big decision but thinks her biological clock may be "broken" and in need of repair. She enrolls in a sinister clinic for treatment, but the radical therapy has some bad side effects. This is one of those horror movies you have to be patient with as it takes time to develop characters and set up the situations. And when the "good stuff" kicks in it makes you feel the wait was worth it. The scenes with the "tall woman" are especially creepy and unsettling. Director Alexis Jacknow use psychological horror as a seering indictment on undue societal pressures, as well as demonstrating the hardships and ordeals a woman goes through with pregnancy. Thought-provoking stuff, although the final shot is a noodle scratcher. 7/10

Red Snow(2021) Horror-Comedy. The week before Christmas Olivia, a vampire/romance novelist, finds a wounded Vampire and decides to take care of him. In return he starts helping her with her writing. The comedy part is more amusing than LOL funny, but the heroine is likeable in a silly, cute sort of way. The horror parts do get serious at times, and people do get killed. Probably my 1st Vampire Christmas movie. 6/10.

So... These last months have sucked alot. My 9 year old Cat is a Hospice case from Cancer. Movies have been a nice distraction. "Island of Snake people", "The last man on Earth", "House of the living dead", "The Devil's Rain", "Werewolf of Washington"."Death Line", "The Oblong Box", Area 51", "Cujo", and "Mindhunters" (2004).

PHASE IV - 1974 - The ants! The ants! Lots of close ups of ants. I watched a version with the original WTF ending included. Released 50 years ago yesterday or thereabouts.
