OK, no idea why Iβm in a mood for Ten Little Indians knockoffs today, but I just finished April Foolβs Day (1986). Now this is how you do a Ten Little Indians knockoff. Plot: A bunch of college goofballs go to a Pacific Northwest Maine island for April Foolβs weekend, where they get murdered off one by oneβ¦ Fun little slasher flick, starts off kinda stupid but builds to good humor and genuine suspense. This is surprisingly well-directed, with solid shot choices and far better acting than youβd expect from the premiseβand a zillion times better than Friday the Thirteenth. Also surprisingly, but welcomely, the gore isnβt gratuitous. As for the twist:
Itβs inoffensive, unlike Identityβs. Itβs done more satisfyingly than youβd expect, for one thing, and at least it leaves the viewer with a grin on his face.
That said, I would have appreciated including a twist-on-the-twist, which according to Wikipedia was in the original script: Really too bad that wasnβt included. Still, this was a lot of fun. Definitely recommended for viewing around April 1.

That said, I would have appreciated including a twist-on-the-twist, which according to Wikipedia was in the original script: βA third act of the film present in Walton's original cut had the group leaving the island, and Skip enacting an actual murder of Muffy, wanting to take their familial inheritance for himself. Paramount executives disliked this dark turn in the plot, and mandated that this final act be excised so that the film could end on a high note, with the characters celebrating after the revelation of Muffy's elaborate prank.β Really too bad that wasnβt included. Still, this was a lot of fun. Definitely recommended for viewing around April 1.
I agree and actually do watch this one every April 1st ( April Fool's Day )
also have this movie on VHS too .
Thanks so much Salzmank for this fun and amusing movie reminder here also .

*Some of these may contain spoilers*
In the Mouth of Madness (1994) - 4.5/5
Could have sworn Iβve seen this before but literally nothing rang a bell. Either way though this was fantastic. Right up my alley with the bizarre dreamlike nature of which it plays out. Can see this sky rocketing up my favorites list after a rewatch or two.
The Fog (1980) - 4.5/5
Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere! In my opinion the best lighting in a carpenter flick not titled Halloween too. Great cast. Just a gorgeous film from top to bottom and one of Carpenterβs absolute best.
Escape from New York (1981) - 4/5
Kurt Russell is a certified badass here. Watching him navigate through a ravaged New York City is a blast. One scene in particular, when the dwellers were coming up from the sewers made me feel as if I was in a straight up zombie flick for a minute! Very fun genre bending offering from carpenter here and can totally see why itβs up there on so many best of lists.
Hungry Wives (1972) - 3/5
Very early Romero where for me I felt there was a ton of build up that doesnβt pay off well. It takes forever for our lead to become a witch and even when she does, not much happens. Just wasnβt what I was expecting I guess. Nevertheless this was a treat to watch Romero experiment with his craft at a very early stage in his career. He does a great job with dream sequences here as well.

It's most definitely a twist ending we would never have expected ( right Jay ? ) .
I remember renting that one many years ago on VHS
at the local rental store back in the 1980's - when it was brand new
a really good movie but literally haven't seen it since then .
If only one of the cable TV Channels or
even On-Demand would show this one again soon that would be awesome .

It's so true Jay once you start watching these classic horror flicks
it will definitely leave quite a lasting impression
that you will want to watch way more of these
( the storylines alone are usually the most intriguing ) .
That's another awesome thing about the 1970's and 1980's was the discovery
of all these new yet unfamiliar at that time horror flicks that you could come across
at the video store it was so easy to get hooked on every weekend for sure .
So many cool movies to choose from that some are now cult classics too .
I definitely recommend watching more like these again very soon .

did you ever see re-animator? We watched that in the chat last week and that did not go over so well with a few people because of the gore. One person got sick and had nightmares π§

Absolutely Jay definitely rented this good classic one back in the day
and then bought it on VHS in the early 1990's too !!
That's definitely another awesome memorable fun flick
and handsome actor Jeffrey Combs was the best in this one also .
The poster & movie cover caught my eye back in the day to a must rent deal .
The gore in this one is really no different than stuff of most movies and TV Shows of back then & today
perhaps it must be certain folks who don't watch horror or slasher flicks all that often in their lives ( IMPO - The HELLRAISER Film series is way more stomach churning than most of these films combined ? ) .

DEEP RED 1975 -- First of all-I was fooled by the killer's identity even though I did notice the "painting" in the early scene where psychic is killed.
And the red herring worked, I had suspicions about a particular character and sure enough they filmed that character in a certain way to make you suspicious-I even wonder if they switched performers for one shot to make you get weirded out on a sub conscious level.

Just watched a Spanish Horror Zombie movie that was made on the English countryside, No profanar el sueΓ±o de los muertos aka Let Sleeping Corpses Lie aka The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue 1974. The living dead are awoke thanks to radiation that is being used by area farmers as a pesticide alternative. A police inspector is hunting a young couple who he thinks are guilty of a lot of dead bodies, maybe they are satanists or something. Rather exciting, with good use of the English countryside, and a very dumb police inspector (played by American Arthur Kennedy), but I'm no expert of Zombie movies.

Elizabeth Harvest (2018) A very rich man brings his young bride home to his mansion. He has one room she must promise never to enter, so naturally what does she do the 1st chance she gets? I won't reveal more as much of the charm of this movie lies in the effort to figure out what the hell is going on. It throws you clues, and curve balls, and surprises throughout. Under rated, IMO, on IMDB at 5.7. I'll give it a 7.5

So-so Hammer production. You would have to think Christopher Lee got the role of Fu Manchu because of this film.
