The Mad Magician (1954) FTV. Watched this on Svengoolie. Vincent Price is good, Mary Murphy is cute, and Lenita Lane has an amusing role as a meddling landlady, but overall I found the movie too dull to give it any more than a 5/10.

On a lazy Saturday afternoon I caught Midnight Lace (1960) on the telly. A tidy, stylised Hitchcock inspired little thriller of superb production, which plays around with the spiralling concept of ”Is someone toying around or is it all in your head?”. I thought the shady atmosphere, suspicious toiling and tension fueled development of its delirious chain of events are more riveting, and fulfilling than the predictably fizzled-out denouncement. The journey was certainly better than the destination. As for the twist, it virtually rehashes another suspense classic of golden age cinema and it shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Doris Day plays a wife of a rich Londonder (Rex Harrison), becoming the target of threatening phone calls and being stalked by an ominous looking man dressed in black. She finds herself pushed over the edge, when people begin to doubt any of this is truly happening. Day’s performance is of full commitment. At times very hysterical in her commotions, but nonetheless believable and entertaining in depicting her unstable mindset. Those night time scenes of Day trembling in fear after the phone call, or jumping at shadows encroaching in her room, were evocativly lit up, filtered with potent colours and photographed to great dramatic effect. Also showing up in solid bit parts are Roddy McDowell, John Gavin and Myrna Loy.

Leprechaun (1993) by Mark Jones
"I Want Me Gold, NOOOOOOOOW!!!!"
A couple of days or so, too late but I quite enjoyed most of this horror/comedy which incredibly enough had 5 or 6 sequels following and in one of them, I think the little green bastard is even flying out to space in search of other miserable people he can torture and kill.
Anyway, I had not seen it since 2012 and was kind of curious if it had held up as "good" as I kind of hoped for, specially after seeing the poor but somewhat still enjoyable Leprchechaun in da Hood movies not that long ago. The film have a feel to it which reminds me of some of the Critters movies, silly and goofy but decent enough as late night entertainment.
Of course, it do help very much having a fine as they come 23-24 year old Jennifer Aniston in the lead and once again she portrays the spoilt rotten L.A. valley teenage girl part very well, and was only a year or so away of breaking it big with the role of Rachel Green in Friends. Here however I found it quite "hard" to believe how she almost instantly fell head over heel for some random bloke, still it is really not much to nitpick about, it is a very light hearted movie and story. The rest of the cast is an annoying kid and his mumbling "sidekick", the dad figure somehow disappears shortly after arriving and I never sensed that there was much of a great chemistry between the main gang, so there was not many to cheer for, in fact the main star and the reason to why this film works so well is down to Warwick Davis in the hilarious part as the irish "Weee" little fella who only wants his gold coins back, the Leprechaun and almost every line he utters is actually not that far off being comedy "gold".
While not a great film, I was still entertained and my interest of seeing a few of the other in the series just grew a little, so hopefully I might get to do so in the near future.
It is not far off films such as Ghoulies, Troll 1 and 2 and I also had fond memories of another Mark Jones horror comedy which also starred another nasty little wee fella with the name of Rumpelstiltskin that came out a few years later, but have not seen it for some time and maybe I will do something about it sooner or later as I remember it to be quite a ride.
5,5/10

Dario Argento's Profondo rosso 1975 aka as Deep Red. great coloured restored version. I don't wan't to give away too much, former swingin' London star David Hemmings does well, all I can say that it is spooky but not supernatural, or is it??

"White Cannibal Queen" A Jesus Franco joint... A White girl is kidnapped by Cannibals. Years later her Father sets out to find her. Death scenes are in slow mo. Probably won't watch it again anytime soon. Not awful. But not great either. Beats the hell out of "Oasis of the Zombies".
"Mountain of the Cannibals" Another film cashing in on the craze. Super unecessary shots of animals being killed and eaten. (Just my 2 cents) Also a super gross scene involving a Boar towards the end. But aside from that it's not too shabby. A woman goes looking for her missing Husband.
"Angst" Whoooa this one was a doozy. Based on a real massacre. A psychotic calmly narrates as he invades a family's home. Filmed in real time.
"A Blade in the dark" Giallo! mi amore! Enjoyed this one. About a composer witnessing strange goings on at a House. Was supposed to be a miniseries where someone dies at the end of every episode. Ultimately it was edited into a film.
"The New York Ripper" Another grisly slasher. The killer hacks up pretty women and uses a Dobald Duck voice. Pretty creepy. Decent watch.

![]() aka Blind Terror (1973) Thankfully my region free blu/dvd combo has a reversible cover, and the second image is the cover my copy now sports. A tad slow by today's standards, but a very good film that's truly suspenseful.

Internal Affairs (1990) by Mike Figgis
I never saw the entire film but always remembered one particular scene when it was on television, very late back in the early 00s. Richard Gere in the part of the "everyday" police officer role, ends up beating the crap out of Andy Garcia in an elevator. Garcia who is supposed to be more of the complete opposite of Gere is here seen as the clean cut and professional investigator Raymond Avilla who ends up falling right into a sleazy and violent trap set up by the sadistic Dennis Peck (Gere), who then finishes the "conversation" by telling Avilla that his wife (Nancy Travis) likes it rough and closes it off by giving him a pair of female panties to clean up the blood with. Next scene have Garcia going into a complete berserk mode, ending up with him knocking out his own wife in a fully crowded restaurant.
I have always wanted to see the rest of the film, and when I now finally did I was not all that impressed by the end result. Sure, as a crime thriller it was fun seeing Rirchard Gere in a very different kind of a role to what I guess he was most known for at the time, which I guess was due to being often "typecasted" as the romantic lead, and since he had already done such a job in one of the years most popular films in Pretty Woman (1990), I think he handled himself very well as the calculating psychopath we get to see in Internal Affairs. Andy Garcia plays the heroic part ok, but is not given much of a chance to give his character any real "depth", and where the beautiful Nancy Travis feels kinda "wasted" in the role as Garcia's pretty young career driven wife.
It is very obvious from the very first go that this film is trying hard to make people forget Richard Gere as the romantic first lover and show that he can also be the villain, and a very evil one as well. It works mostly fine but the film and its story is a little to thin and ends up falling a few times too many into very overused cliche ridden scenes which seems poorly delivered and acted out, and sadly ruins some of the movies more serious scenes.
All in all, a decent crime movie but still one that could have been much better executed. However, it sure did contain some entertaining scenes here and there and Gere provived one of his more memorable roles during the 90s.
6/10

I totally agree here masterofallgoons . The film ROPE does seem to be very overlooked in all of Alfred Hitchcock's film series . I also have this film on DVD too . IMPO - What also makes an excellent compliment to this film is definitely it's movie trailer ( which is also in my DVD Collection ) . Also IMPO - It seems to give more of a profile to the main character David whom indeed has a very short role in this one ( and of course is mentioned a great deal throughout this film too ) . If you do go to that AH Double Feature tonight - enjoy it definitely seems like an intriguing good time as well . Thanks so much masterofallgoons for your reply .

My second fave of hers - Full Circle (a.k.a. The Haunting of Julia) from 1977It always seems these 2 intriguing films are never shown enough on TV . Also very glad to see here that you have this one as a DVD & Blu-Ray Combo too - excellent choice for the collection indeed . Thanks so much atomicfrog for the reminder on this film too .

I Spit on Your Grave (2010)
Decent, but obvious. Acting by the lead and a couple of others was surprisingly good. The sheriff was slightly overzealous IMO; usually I would have no problem with that, but this movie was clearly going for a very serious tone, and I don't think it was appropriate. The gore effects were nicely done (bath scene was the peak IMO), there was a frustrating, but very quick use of CGI gore in one scene.
This movie is very, very obvious. It doesn't really change anything major from the original, and there was plenty of room for twists, even an obvious twist would've been satisfying, but there was nothing of the kind. The plot is entirely textbook, you know everything that will unfold from 15-20 minutes in. Shock value is the driving force behind this movie, and whilst that might be very effective for casual viewers, seasoned horror fans have seen it all before.
5/10

The Omen, 1976 Still scary after all these years, and maddening. Gregory Peck still the best thing in it (curious how IMDb lists his height as 6'2... and a half inches. As if they couldn't give him the half inch and call it 6'3").

Since it was Roger Corman's birthday: The Pit and the Pendulum 1961. Are there ghosts from the past in the castle or is someone trying to drive Nicholas Medina insane? I thought it dragged the first time I watched, but this time I thought much better of it. Some interesting pre-psychodelia camera angles and colour images too.
