"Freeway" (1988)
Officially based on a novel, but prompted by real-life crimes in L.A., this is a decent, well paced (it's just about an hour and a half long) thriller with an appealing Darlanne Fluegel as a nurse in pursuit of psychotic freeway killer Billy Drago. Overall, it's nothing special, but it's reasonably entertaining. James Russo is amusing as he attempts to do his best Mickey Rourke.

I did a bad impulse buy in winter based on the fact that the cheap looking DVD cover/artwork said: Rourke in Paper Bullets then with a big picture of Russo who really did look like Mickey, at least there, so I probably should have taken a look at the backside to see what kind of a film I had just bought, but since it was dirt cheap and I had not much time, I just hoped for the best. When I think about it, Russo actually looked more like Bruce Willis in the early 90s than Mickey Rourke, but what fooled me in was the Rourke name above the movie title. Anyway, the film was poor and I ended up throwing it into the garbage the next day.

"Tomie Unlimited" Odd Asian horror film. About an evil spirit named Tomie who wreaks bloody violence. A series of films. Very gory over the top stuff.
"The Hotel!" About Siblings who inherit a Beachside mansion. They decide to turn it into a Hotel. Hauntings and deaths occur. It was ok. I was expecting more of a slasher.
"The Twilight Syndrome: Death Cruise" and "Murder go-Round" Based on a videogame. Pretty watchable. Seemed to have a decent budget even if the violence is cartoonish. Players get trapped in a Videogame. You die in the Game you die for real. Cruise takes place on a big Ship. The 2nd film feels lower budget and takes place at an Amusement park.

Really enjoy the "Tomie" series, but this dispensed the low-rent atmospherics of the early films for utter craziness with some outrageous FX too. No surprises since it's from the same guy who did "Machine Girl" and "Robogeshia".

Watched the Aussie horror "Next of Kin (1982)" the other night. Talk about a film that slowly builds up its mystery with subtle touches and disorienting spells to go totally insane for its third act. The tonal shift really caught me off guard. Its stylishly crafted, as the camerawork and music score is outstanding. The uncanny score is definitely my favourite thing about it. Interesting to see a young John Jarratt in the cast too.

Next of Kin (1982) I agree this was a really good film and also remember renting this one on VHS Tape back in the mid 1980's from the video store too . Although surprisingly I haven't seen this classic movie since then . Thanks so much lostinlimbo for the reminder on this film too .

I'm watching right now and have watched this one a few times before ( but it's still really a good film just the same) . Chernobyl Diaries (2012)

"One Dark Night" (1982)
I'm a big fan of this one. Good atmosphere, appropriately gnarly looking corpses, an entertaining plot involving the supernatural, and of course the lovely and adorable Meg Tilly.

The Gift (2000)Overnatural drama-thriller with a bit of mystery thrown in. Solid acting by almost everybody involved, specially Cate Blanchett in the leading role, Giovanni Ribisi was impressive and to my surprise Keanu Reeves, well not great exactly but at least here he looked like he gave a damn, this time as a bullying woman beating redneck. I am pretty sure he did another "psycho" role that year, but this time as a serial killer against (I think James Spader) and I guess he wanted to take on some more villainous parts, as he was maybe a bit "afraid" he would be type-casted into just a bunch of Neo (The Matrix) kind of action/hero roles. I thought The Gift started up very well, but sadly for my part the film went down, and fast, the moment I imediately knew who the killer was and it pretty much destroyed any chance the film (for me that is) had of getting higher than a 6/10. To many cliches that followed and I felt that Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear was not all right for their parts. Anyway, it was a good movie, not great and a 6,5/10 is what I think it deserves, but the final climax was big letdown and brought the film down, even more. Blood & Chocolate (2007)Another dreadful werewolf/teenage romance gone bad, ala Twilight movies where you have some arrogant and very unlikable main characters suddenly meeting in Romania and where a bunch werewolf people lives among the humans, side by side. Of course, not everybody wants it like that, and they want to create chaos and destruction. Most of the werewolfs in the film just jumps around all over the place like a bunch of horny monkeys, and are not the least scary looking or menacing, just a bunch of ridiculous clowns. I actually ended up falling a sleep halfway through, and when I woke up I decided to go back but press fast forwards as there was no way in hell I would waste more time on this "classic". My main problem was the main lead, she looks like some rich and arrogant daddys little spoilt girl who has the same smug and douchy facial appearance throughtout almost 99 percent of the film. I guess the good parts is that some of the scenes in the wood/town of Romania was actually well shot, and they seemed to use real wolves not horrible CGI, which was pretty cool. Since I fell a sleep and fast forwarded through this piece of crap, I feel that giving it a 2/10 might be too "hard", so I ended up with a very kind 3/10 instead.

"Re-Animator"
Still a knockout horror comedy, one of the best of all H.P. Lovecraft adaptations. Very funny and packed to the gills with wonderful outré makeup effects and gore. Great performances, especially from the hilarious Jeffrey Combs and David Gale. Barbara Crampton and her ... assets. The picture quality on the Arrow release is excellent. Incidentally, I didn't know it at first, but it was H.P. Lovecrafts' birthday yesterday. How more appropriate can you get?

Yeah, Keanu gives an above average performance in that one. "The Watcher" is the flick where he plays the serial killer. I haven't seen "The Gift" in some time, but I do remember liking it.

Hell House (2016)
100 percent better than I expected. Gave me a jump (in a non jump scare moment) that I have experienced in recent movies. New favorite scary clown.

Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004) Silly, horror/adventure b-movie that is full of cliches and sterotypical figures, but I was in the right "mood" and so I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. I like the first one from 1997, the one with the squeling like a pig giant snake and of course it did help having both the stunning Kari Wuhrer and Jennifer Lopez around, and this was before she become the brand that would be JLO, and I almsot forgot Jon Voight as some psychotic, bad ass snake hunter who has his own evil agenda and completely steals the show. Anyway, in the 2004 film we end up following a bunch of douchy businessmen/women, researchers and then throw in some poor man's Indiana Jones/Crocodile Dundee rip-off and instead of one giant snake, we now have a whole bunch of them showing up whenever "needed". As I mentioned above, this is a silly and very goofy movie but one that manages to keep the pace up and never becomes boring or dull, and so I ended up with a very kind: 5/10

I remember mildly enjoying it. Still not as much fun as the hilarious "so bad it's good" killer snake thriller from '97.

"The Angry Red Planet" (1959)
Highly amusing, gimmick heavy sci-fi / horror flick with an innovative visual approach (Cinemagic, baby!) and a couple of extremely memorable monsters to make it fun.

Underworld: Blood Wars (2016) FTV 5/10 I know Vampires have an aversion to sunlight but there were just too many scenes in almost total darkness.

Last night I watched the Shout! Factory blu-ray edition of The Beast Within, after having received it in the mail. I still liked it and thought it still holds up fairly well today with the cool make-up effects. Great cast too, which includes Ronny Cox, Don Gordon, L.Q. Jones, and R.G. Armstrong (man, how many horror flicks has this guy been in!). So all-in-all this is good horror fare.
I have yet to check out the audio commentaries.

I'm a big fan of The Beast Within, as I'm sure I said somewhere up above. I recently revisited it myself.
That's a good release. Both commentaries are entertaining and informative.

Blackmail (1929) - This was my first time seeing this early Hitchcock classic and I was pleasantly surprised as I was expecting something dated and barely watchable. Blackmail is a great suspense thriller about a young woman (beautiful Czech actress Anny Ondra) who kills a rapist in self defense and runs away from the crime scene. Her boyfriend is the police detective in charge of solving the murder while a blackmailer threatens to spill the beans on her. The ending is 'classic Hitchcock'.
The film was definitely ahead of its time and it has the distinction of being Britain's first talkie film.
My rating: 9/10
