I thought "forced diversity" was when they race-swap already-existing characters for inclusion (which honestly isn't a big deal to begin with), but apparently the presence of originally created minority characters for movies and shows that haven't existed prior to the franchise's other projects constitutes as "forced diversity" as well, case in point Reva in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Hmm... Here's how I differentiate forced vs. natural diversity. Pretend you have a school that accepts all races and nationalities provided they pass the academic requirements. And then you ended up with some students being white, some black, some latino, some Asian etc. Sometimes white students are the most populous, some years you have more latinos, sometimes Asians, etc. The school doesn't care, they just keep taking in students depending on academic requirements. Racial population could be as skewed as 90% caucasian or 70% Asian, or can be completely equal ratios of each... school doesn't care. That's natural diversity. Forced diversity is when the school starts implementing quotas. Say they only take in 25% white students and after that 25% is completed they'll no longer take in white students. Then they'll also cap Asians at 25% and then they'll try to canvass for more blacks and latinos to make sure they get full 25% ratios for each. That's forced diversity, because you're literally enforcing a rule to make it diverse. Translating that to movies and TV shows: To me forced diversity doesn't necessarily mean you race-swap an existing character (though that's usually a good example). It's when you introduce a character of color for the simple reason of, "Hey, we need to make sure we hit our quota for having more people of color in the cast". Sometimes that means race-swapping a character, sometimes it means introducing a brand new character just to make sure you hit your diversity quota. So...no matter who the character is or what they do you're just going to write them off because they happen to not be white?

I’m kinda sorry I called you an idiot, but I’m kinda not because you’re quick to label someone as racist. One should be free to speak on sensitive matters without being labeled as racist. This is part of the reason (just one part, but a significant one) why the quality of Marvel and Star Wars sucks now. Forced diversity does contribute to poor output. It is antithetical to the ideal of a meritocracy. Diversity does exist in a meritocracy, but it’s organic. It may not reflect society precisely, although in time it likely will, but forcing it leads to inferior results. While I can agree the term 'racist' gets thrown around a lot, it's possible to be racist without using racial slurs, or without even realizing you're racist. Who starts threads complaining about equal representation on screen? Who uses terms like 'forced diversity?' Who points to a black character on a terribly written show and specifically points out her race as the major problem with the character? I'll tell you who doesn't, people who don't care about race. Good question. Not me. But whilst you mention it, I wouldn’t mind it, so long as it isn’t forced. But why would there be equal representation when they are minorities? We don’t mandate diversity quotas for sport, so why do it in cinema?

You guys always argue semantics because you know you're wrong. What is 'forced diversity?' How was Lando not forced but Reva is? Why does it matter that Reva is black? Why is it so offensive to you? It's bizarre. But then, you hang around a message board for movies that you hate, so I guess you just like being angry all the time.

Reva was included at a late stage with the stated reason (I swear there was confirmation of it from a writer or producer or something, it was covered on the boards but I can’t find it now but I will if I’m pressed) of including a minority into this lead role. So it was a bad character who was included precisely because the casting was not considered diverse enough. The series was garbage with or without her but she was still the worst part. So it’s offensive because it was the epitome of woke culture being a significant factor ruining modern franchises. I don’t know why anyone would appreciate that. I saw ep five of Mando. The casting was diverse but it worked. I have never cared about that. I mean the series stinks but it wasn’t the casting. There’s other things that were infuriating about Reva, or more to the point Disney’s defence of Reva. They used complaints against Reva as a scapegoat against their shitty product. Like they did with Rose Tico. They make this shit, then as a defence against getting ratio-ed on Youtube and other criticism of their shows and they highlight racism. And everyone falls for it, even Ewen McGregor.

The fact that they wanted a minority for the role shouldn't really be the issue. As you said, the show was going to suck no matter what...so why does Reva stick out to you? Why is that the focal point of your criticism? I suppose you already answered that question, I just wonder when it is you'll realize how racist that sounds? Because who gives a fucking shit that she's black?! If Reva was white, and the writing was identical, you'd just say the show sucked, period. But the show sucks, and they had to include a black Reva!!! You're constantly waging a culture war on this board, it's like a FoxNews invasion. Stuff like 'The Mutants' because X-Men isn't inclusive enough or whatever would be lame, I'm with you there. But the extent to which this stuff bothers you is something I'll never be able to comprehend. Look at your previous argument. "They're minorities in real life, let's make sure it stays that way on screen. Let's not act like these people are on the same level with us here." That's your argument. Are you seeing the racism yet? How many posts and threads with the same angry arguments about 'forced diversity' and 'wokeness' are you going to make, while insisting you don't have a problem with social equality? The first thing you said in this thread: It sure seems to matter to you. There better not be too many non-whites in there, because 'diversity hires' (another subtle but not-so-subtle racist term you constantly use) just make everything worse. This is your stance, as explained right here in this conversation. I know I'm talking to a wall here, you're never going to understand why you're wrong, much less admit to it. Hell, you're never going to stop talking about movies you hate, which is sad in its own right. Just don't be surprised when people call you on your bullshit.

It’s that they clumsily shunted this shambolic role into a pre-existing script BECAUSE they wanted a minority lead role. If the role already existed that wouldn’t be such an issue. Yes, for the umpteenth time, Obi-Wan completely sucked either way but it is particularly galling that they would have the temerity to add a pivotal character to an existing script because they wanted to have a minority lead role. That sets a precedent that even future good scripts (if they could come up with them) could potentially be ruined by such stupidity and lack of concern for quality. It wouldn’t be an issue if a minority was given a lead role that existed in the script. It wouldn’t even be such an issue if the actor sucked. But this is the triumvirate of awfulness. Terrible character, terrible casting AND politically-motivated interference.

But then radical social movements took over which only served to divide us. I believe that race relations were better 20 years ago than today. Again, diversity works better when it’s organic. There were black leads back when the actors got that role because they deserved it. Because the public liked them. We are being told about representation in every second film now. Idris Alba has said he’s tired of it. And many, many others are too, including members of minorities.

What do Latinos or LGTBQ or whatever else want to see on screen? I have no idea, but their inclusion in a story doesn't bother me. It clearly bothers you. I'd say get over it, but you can't. Probably not much. But you’ll watch it. Imagine if it was awesome. We all know Star Wars has that potential. You’d be watching every episode three times in a year. Maybe ten times throughout your life. We all would. And the MCU? Imagine if that was awesome {chortle}. We would be very happy. It could have been legendary. But all of the potential was squandered. Don’t tell me it’s not important. It’s important to all of us.

'Organic' diversity was taking too long for people on the outside looking in, even if it was working perfectly fine for you. (But again, this concept is just too much for your brain to handle.) You have SEVEN THREADS on the first page of this board alone, a board for movies you say you hate. Most of those conversations are you bitching about wokeness, forced diversity, and other nonsense nobody else cares about. Idris Alba is tired of hearing about it? So are the rest of us on this board. When will you be? When will you recognize that you're the problem? I didn't start this thread about representation, you did. I don't have to live under a rock, I just don't need to follow culture war hot topics as closely as you do (again, see the first post in this thread, I have no idea what you're talking about there, because I don't care). What do Latinos or LGTBQ or whatever else want to see on screen? I have no idea, but their inclusion in a story doesn't bother me. It clearly bothers you. I'd say get over it, but you can't. It's only a matter of time before you start yet another thread on a message board for movies you hate, complaining about the same shit over and over again. Way to live. Dude we are all disappointed by how badly these franchises are handled. We would all be much happier if they were better. There was an episode of Mandalorian released today. Do you care? Probably not much. But you’ll watch it. Imagine if it was awesome. We all know Star Wars has that potential. You’d be watching every episode three times in a year. Maybe ten times throughout your life. We all would. And the MCU? Imagine if that was awesome {chortle}. We would be very happy. It could have been legendary. But all of the potential was squandered. Don’t tell me it’s not important. It’s important to all of us. And if you really cared, you wouldn't complain about nonwhites in roles.
