Another one. Halloween 3 when Cochran is speaking about the history: You don't really know much about Halloween. You thought no further than the strange custom of having your children wear masks and go out begging for candy. It was the start of the year in our old Celtic lands, and we'd be waiting in our houses of wattles and clay. The barriers would be down, you see, between the real and the unreal, and the dead might be looking in to sit by our fires of turf. Halloween... the festival of Samhain! The last great one took place three thousand years ago, when the hills ran red with the blood of animals and children. It was part of our world... our craft. To us, it was a way of controlling our environment. It's not so different now... it's time again. In the end, we don't decide these things, you know; the planets do. They're in alignment, and it's time again. The world's going to change tonight, Doctor, I'm glad you'll be able to watch it. And... Happy Halloween. Always loved how Cochran puts a little bit more into his delivery when uttering the lines such as: "You thought no further than the strange custom of having your children wear masks and go out begging for candy." and "The last great one took place three thousand years ago, when the hills ran red with the blood of animals and children." Chilling delivery and you could feel his distaste of what Halloween had turned into, and a great speech and scene, almost like it was taken out of a James Bond movie.

Yes--the sense of authority he had when speaking about it--also his comical nature changes to serious and that makes it all the more disturbing. He could have been tongue-in-cheek if he had wanted to--but by taking that delivery, it makes the horror more believable.

Another one--Delbert Grady in the Shining when he says "you've always been the caretaker here."

"The Untold Story" based on a real case. The main actor looks genuinely insane. The ending is very creepy and hard to watch. It's rumored he cooked some of the Family of the Restaurant he took over. Remains were found in bags in the Water.

Another one with Calvin Lockhart was Predator 2 where he is talking about the predator. That was a suspenseful scene entirely due to performance. "You don't see the eyes of the demon--until he comes a-calling."

If Roberts Blossom in 1974's Deranged doesn't scare the living daylights out of you, no film performance will.

I think of her every Halloween when we carve pumpkins, the innards on the back always look just like her spine.

FRIGHT NIGHT has a few moments. Evil Ed's scenes as a vampire. When he appears to Roddy McDowall--it's somehow extra spooky because Peter Vincent is so unnerved--it makes Stephen Geoffreys quite intimidating as he says "you know, I used to admire you.."
Also Chris Sarandon's unsettling line emphasis when he says "welcome to Fright Night ... for real."
