Yes it did take a turn away from previous seasons in terms of theme/genre. Three of the episodes are pretty much horror more than sci-fi, but overall I quite liked this season. Certainly better (IMO) than season 5.
Joan is Awful - fun concept, perhaps played a little to light/silly, most in line with previous BM seasons
Loch Henry - nice atmosphere, would have like some more build up and establishment. Didn't really like the "twist", but decent overall
Beyond the Sea - probably the best if a little predictable. Played the most straight which worked in it's favor and overall still kept within the sci-fi genre
Mazey Day - pretty slight and silly, easily the weakest of the season
Demon 79 - another one with a nice atmosphere and aesthetic, but again wished it had been played a little straighter

I've only seen Loch Henry and Beyond the Sea so far. The former was kinda filler, but the latter was premium BM. It's nice that Josh Hartnett is having a mini comeback and he was great in this episode, other than getting bullied by little Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul was also great but that's to be expected). You guys have me scared of the rest.

Joan is Awful gave me the same vibes of the Miley Cyrus episode. It's not quite as bad, but way too cutesy, especially once the "real" Salma Hayek comes in.
I've also heard people criticize Netflix for having its cake and eating it too here, ie lightly satirizing themselves with no intention to change, because it's hip and business savvy to be self deprecating now. I mean, I guess, but not my main problem with the episode.
