It seems that the widespread consensus, sight unseen, for Spider-Man Homecoming is that that this new approach is a turn-off. Most of the complaints I am hearing and reading revolve around the coming of age story, the presence of Iron Man and a marketing campaign that shows too much skin. In the face of that, I have to ask the naysayers this: What in God's name did you want to see in a new Spider-Man movie that hasn't been covered thoroughly by the previous franchises? My guess is stuff featuring clones, Carnage or the Sinister Six - none of which I am interested in. For me, Homecoming is going to mix the best of two genres I love - the super-hero origin and a coming of age story. Sigh... In any event, for those of you who don't mind serious spoilers, enjoy these gifts from Atomica:

Millennial Spidey was mind numbingly shitty. Most people are just bored at the idea of yet another Spider-Man movie. Wasn't the first Rami Spidey a coming of age movie more or less? Peter Parker was just coming of age a bit belated.
The Iron Man stuff feels very lame though. How many more times are they going to trot out snarky douchebag Stark? If they don't feel confident anyone wants to see this new spiderboy why even make the movie?

The film is directly about a street level hero taking on people who are involved with cleaning up the destruction from Avengers conflicts, and the widespread consensus is that it's looking just fine.

I didn't know they had a screening yet. Usually if anything the reactions are inflated, not the other way around. I'll stay optimistic, though.
I will admit that the marketing has just been a bit...off. As I was watching the NBA Finals, there were several TV spots and I wasn't into it. I really hope it surprises me.

I would've wanted a more Bond style approach... Meaning something that isn't a blatant reboot but rather just a new movie within new actor and a slightly different creative direction. As someone who loved the Raimi series I am not interested in a "definitive" version. I just want new movies with new villains.
To speak specifically to what we've seen so far: I wanted a solo adventure that's at least relatively unconnected to the rest of the MCU, not a "Spidey auditions for the Avengers" story. Also the humor and tone just feel wrong to me. It feels forced and awkward. I do however like the villain choice. Vulture played by Keaton is the silver lining.

I'm a huge Bond fan, Godfather fan, and of course things like Indiana Jones, Alien (BTW you have to play Alien Isolation if you've never picked up that game) and some other really great films, but the MCU tops it all with everything they've accomplished at such a high level. It would just feel like such a waste not to be enjoying it.

MCU is contractually obligated to make this crappy Spider-Kid movie. MCU wanted Spider-Kid in Civil War so that they could say they finally got Marvel Comics most iconic character in the MCU. Sony agreed to let MCU have Spider-Kid in Civil War only if MCU would make a Spider-Kid movie and Sony gets a percentage of the profits. That's why MCU has to make this crappy Spider-Kid movie.

But since you mentioned Godfather... Out of curiousity do you really like Part Three? Also, I've been meaning to buy Isolation. Not sure why you brought it up, but thanks for the reminder!

Wait, so Vulture is basically Damage Control?

I actually do like Part 3, but I wouldn't claim it's nearly as enjoyable. Sofia's acting is really bad, and there are a few awkward moments elsewhere, but I do like the idea of catching up with him near the end of his life. I actually appreciate how much different he is, and to see the return of the nice kid who never really wanted the life he led. The first one will always be the best IMO though.
I just brought up Alien Isolation because I happened to see it on my PlayStation menu and I wanted to promote it. Fucking great game.
As for enjoying the MCU, or anything for that matter. It's just this great time to be positive about everything that's going on, and sure it's your right to feel how you feel, but man we're at the peak of this whole run, and if I could encourage everybody to just take it in while we've got it, I would. I think we're going to look back on how epic this run was.

Wait, so Vulture is basically Damage Control? So was Kingpin. I actually like the idea of having that as part of a business for crime bosses. It gives them a way to act like they are the good guys helping out.

Find me one person on this board besides you and me who doesn't have at least one issue with Spider-Man Homecoming based on the marketing. It's the same on all of the other boards I frequent as well. A lot of "fans" would seem to prefer Spider-Man be a solo character who is disconnected from the Marvel Universe. This attitude baffles me considering that the Fantastic Four appears in issue number 1 of the Amazing Spider-Man, Doctor Doom was in issue number 5, the Human Torch was in issue number 8, Daredevil was in issue number 16 and so on and so on... People hate the new tech in the suit but, look at the cover of Amazing Spider-Man number 22. Every tech-gag seen in the Homecoming trailers was actually a thing from the comic books (sans the heaters). I get that people don't like Tony influencing Peter. That's actually the only aspect of Homecoming I'm even moderately concerned about. Peter did learn most of the essential lessons about being a Super-Hero on his own. However, I don't think it's beyond reason to think that he might want to be a part of something bigger than himself at first (i.e., the Avengers). People are entitled to their own opinion but, I feel like a lot of this bitching and moaning is coming from a place of complete ignorance and conditioning brought on by Sony's previous entries in the franchise. I'm sincerely trying to understand their point of view. SaveSave

Find me one person on this board besides you and me My point was that I don't think the 30 people on this board constitute widespread anything. Just relax. It's looking good.
