Food related...
This guy was telling me how some years ago he worked in a very nice restaurant in California somewhere. A top-flight chef worked there. A young guy (18 years old) worked there too, and he had a life-long ambition of being a master chef. As such, he worked very hard at his job and was your proverbial "model employee." The senior chef took notice, appreciating the kid's hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm.
One day the senior chef invited the young guy to accompany him to some sort of food or cooking show, kind of as a treat in recognition of his hard work. They go to the event, later the chef drops the kid off at home...
The next day, the kid does not show up for work. Everybody was baffled, as this was highly unusual for this hard-working employee. A few hours later, they get the news as to the reason why. Apparently, at the food show, they featured a lot of interesting shell fish dishes, of which they happily partook. Turns out the kid had a severe allergy to shell fish - which neither he nor the older chef were ever even aware of. So, apparently he died later that night after being dropped off at home, due to a severe allergy attack.
The entire kitchen staff was shocked by this news, and the senior chef was particularly devastated. The guy telling me this said the kitchen could barely function for a whole week.

Very sad. I was lucky, I had a milder reaction to shellfish when I got sick when we were in Sanibel Island (never had problems before) and another reaction when I was at a "shrimp boil" a few weeks later. I went to the doctor and asked if I should take something whenever I ate shrimp and he told me no! I could never eat shellfish again and that the next "reaction" could be fatal. I also developed an allergy to fish. I always thought it was strange that I developed an allergy later in life.

That is sad ... and, a little strange. California, like Washington, is a coastal state, and seafood isn't exactly rare. Moreover, if the young gentleman was a food/cooking enthusiast, I would think that he would likely have sampled some sort of seafood, in his pursuit of a career.
However, when I was in high school, I was on the student council, for a year. At the end of the year, our faculty advisor took us to dinner at a restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf. I love crab, and most other seafood, so I ordered a "Combination Plate." My stomach had a rough night. I don't know if the combination of rich foods, or if one of the foods was "off." I still eat, and love seafood. But, I always have them individually -- never in combination. So far, so good.

I had similar thoughts, divtal, but perhaps it was a matter of amount ingested... maybe a few bites of shell fish wouldn't have harmed him, but a lot...... I mean, they were at some sort of food show event, so maybe we can assume they tried lots of different dishes, thus going over his limit. I honestly don't know. I *have* heard of people going into fatal allergic reaction after ingesting just a few peanuts, for example. Or people who get really messed up from even a hint of MSG in their food. So, who knows?
As for me, I've never had a problem with fish OR shell fish in my life - with the exception of not being able to tolerate the high prices they charge for it now, lol.
