Mr. Smith Goes to Washington? Correct! French theaters tried to get this movie seen by as many citizens as possible before the Nazis' ban on American films took effect, especially because of its pro-democratic stance in the face of the Nazi fascists. Good thing we no longer have this kind of problem with the banning of films, books, etc. today. Happy (May 18) Birthday, Frank Capra!

And when Paris was liberated four years later, the theater rescued the film from the vault where it had been hidden and screened it continuously for another month in celebration.
