It's widely believed that this performer was selected for a role in this film because of a strong resemblance to a personal nemesis of the director. Who was the performer, and what is the film?

Raymond Burr in REAR WINDOW? If Hitch wanted a Selznick lookalike he should have cast George Cukor

Raymond Burr in REAR WINDOW? Correct! Mr. Burr was made up to look even more like producer David O. Serlznick, with whom Hitchcock clashed during the making of Rebecca. Burr played Lars Thorwald, the ostensible villain in the story, although I always felt that the true villain in the movie was Stewart's character. Burr helped make Thorwald one of the more sympathetic murderers I've ever seen in a film, with his mopey sad-sack appearance and his pathetic attempts to placate his shrewish wife. I think the subsequent killing of the little dog was added just to turn viewers against him more than the murder of his wife. IMO, Jefferies was the true weirdo in the movie. Happy Birthday to actor Raymond Burr! Of all his roles in movies and TV, this is my favorite moment: youtube.com/watch?v=8S4hcYTrOlo

That Jack Benny clip is astounding. I wouldn’t have thought Raymond had that in him. I’ve been watching old Perry Mason episodes lately. There’s close to 300 episodes. I’m really enjoying them now more than I ever did. It’s amazing how, back in those days, there were 30+ episodes of a series each season. Nowadays a show is in Season 7 after 2 years. They were real workhorses back then. I bow down to them.
