Cronenberg is technically a horror director, but I think of him more as a sci-fi director. The Fly is one of my 50 favorite movies. The movie is not only horrific, it is emotionally devastating. Goldblum's monologue about a dream of being human is perhaps the most haunting monologue in any movie. You are watching his humanity slowly get stripped away. "If you stay I will hurt you."

Looks like I might have to push ‘A History of Violence’ up in the queue.

I was young, hoping for a mindless creature-feature outing and it was my first taste of David Cronenberg. At the time I didn’t get want I wanted. But upon each viewing since then, its grown on me. Big time. To the point of little details I missed, making it feel like I'm watching it for the first time again… and again. It's simple in its set-up, but really engages on an emotional level. Thanks a lot to the chemistry between Goldblum and Davis. Cronenberg's remake is pure visionary that successfully splices a real sensitive side with plain unpleasantness and tragedy. Don’t know if anybody else could beat it, let alone match it.

It has went from good to great for me over the years though and for similar reasons.

The Brood - 8.5/10 The Fly - 8/10
Been a while since I watched these:
Shivers - 7/10 Rabid - 7/10 Scanners - 7/10
Hard for me to judge these since I haven't watched them recently but I wasn't that interested in them
The Dead Zone - 6/10 Dead Ringers - 5/10 Naked Lunch - 5/10
I am not sure I have watched Videodrome--I guess I have only watched scenes from it.
I still haven't seen his damn race car movie. I think the Brood is his best overall horror movie. It's gross but the most mainstream and might be the best Canadian horror film--made by someone born in Canada with a mostly Canadian cast (not the main leads though). There's not much competition for that honor.
