These are the only personalities in the entertainment industry who have been given this award. Who are they?

A patent?
Hedy Lamarr - The torpedo guidance system
Zeppo Marx - The first wristwatch to monitor the wearer's heart rate

A patent? Hedy Lamarr - The torpedo guidance system Zeppo Marx - The first wristwatch to monitor the wearer's heart rate NTA; I don't think either one of them even got properly paid for their inventions, let alone given an award. All three of these performers can also be linked to May 29 in some way.

I agree. I don't even know how those bits of trivia have been bouncing around in my brain. Pretty amazing achievements.

IIRC, supposedly Zeppo's invention has some peripheral connection to the dropping of the atomic bomb So they both helped win the war

They weren't involved in the scientific arena of weaponry, but all contributed to the war(s) effort in their own way.

The clue says "personalities," rather than "performers."
Edward R. Murrow received the Medal of Freedom, for WW2 correspondence, and Walter Cronkite received it, for covering The Viet Nam war.
I don't know if that's it ... and, if it is, I can't find a third recipient in that category.

NTA; they were all in the entertainment industry, but two received the award for their work rather than their performances, so that's why I worded it that way. One was an Oscar-winner, but not for acting. Another performed an Oscar-winning song in a film. All of them have appeared in at least one film.

The Bee Gees, Steven Spielberg and (gulp) Bill Cosby have all won the United Nations Peace Medal. Is that it?

The presentation of the award to one of the recipients is depicted (although probably not too historically accurately) in a well-known film.

He did endless entertainment for troops, overseas. And, he sang "Buttons and Bows," in the 1948 The Paleface. Beyond that? Hmm.

I was thinking only of "Thanks for the Memory." Happy (May 29) Birthday, Bob Hope! That's one. Hope appeared in a film with an actor who portrayed one of the other guys in an earlier film. And both Hope and the second guy reached a personal milestone. (As did Hope's wife).

Wow ... we all learn from each other. I didn't know that "Thanks for the Memories," was an Oscar winning song. Gotta keep working on it. You're tough, Marianne.

JW...In recognition of his distinguished career as an actor and his service to the Nation. FS...In recognition of his outstanding and enduring contributions through his entertainment career and numerous humanitarian activities. Well, IMDb did it to me again. According to what I found there, Bob Hope, Irving Berlin, and George M. Cohan were, allegedly, the ONLY three entertainers who were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal. Cohan was given the award by FDR for his morale-boosting WWI songs "Over There" and "You're a Grand Old Flag. Unlike the way it was depicted in Yankee Doodle Dandy, instead of humbly and graciously accepting the award before dancing down the White House staircase, he initially balked at meeting FDR, whom he loathed, and probably had to be prodded up the stairs. Yankee Doodle Dandy premiered in NYC on May 29, 1942, and Cohan viewed this sugarcoated film bio before his death not long afterwards. Irving Berlin's Oscar-winning song "White Christmas" was recorded on May 29, 1942. Berlin was so anxious about the recording session that he reportedly hid in the studio while Bing Crosby recorded it. President Eisenhower gave him the award for his patriotic song "God Bless America." Bob Hope was given the award in 1962 by President Kennedy for his years of overseas tours entertaining the troops; he continued to visit the troops for a few more wars after that. As Eddie Foy in The Seven Little Foys, he performed a dance number along with James Cagney reprising his role as George M. Cohan. He, his wife Dolores, and Irving Berlin all reached or surpassed the age of 100 in their lifetimes. Now it turns out that John Wayne and Frank Sinatra (any others?) also received the same medal? Sheesh. So, I guess the Quickie Trivia Quiz is officially cancelled. It's been fun, but with some of the misinformation I've been finding, there's no point in continuing. So ta-ta and keep watching the skies!
